Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

This is turning in to quite the April snowstorm. Not only was there a foot of dry powder at the resorts overnight, there’s 3” on the ground with snow continuing to fall in the Gorge. The snow snow levels and cold mountain temps continue this week with two to three feet of snow in the forecast before it’s all said and done.

For Monday, heavy snow continues for the entire 24 hour period. The snow level will be 0′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and back to 0′ overnight. About 1.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today for 12-14” new powder. Another 0.9” WE is forecast tonight, for 9-11” more. Wind: NE 10-15 in the morning, NW 20-25 in the afternoon, and NW 15-20 overnight.

Snow continues on Tuesday, but the forecasting gets trickier thanks to instability-driven snowfall in the afternoon. The snow level will be 0′ in the morning, 500-1000′ in the afternoon, and 0′ overnight. About 0.5” WE is forecast during the day for 5-7” new. Another 0.3”+ is forecast overnight, for 3-4” more. Wind: NW 15-20 in the morning, variable to 15 in the afternoon, and W 10-15 overnight.

Wednesday will be snowy early, then partly cloudy, then mostly clear. Just a trace of snow is forecast during the day. The snow level will be 0′ in the morning, 1000′ in the afternoon, and 0′ overnight. Wind: W 10-15 early, E 15 midday, and E 15-25 overnight.

Cool weather continues Thursday and Friday with a shot at some afternoon orographic snow flurries. Wow. What a week!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Well… it sure will make for some pretty pictures if you shred the river today… We starts with light and variable wind with easterlies at 10-15 east of The Dalles. Afternoon wind turns westerly at 11-14 in the western Gorge with 24-28 east of The Dalles. River flow is 185kcfs, river temp is 46F, and high temp forecast is 44F. Tuesday starts with nearly calm wind. In the afternoon, we’ll have E 10-15 west of Hood River and E 5-10 east of Hood River. High temp: 46F. Wednesday starts calm. Afternoon wind rises to 20-25 near Stevenson, 10-15 at Rooster, and 5-10 east of Hood River. High temp: 45F.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Cycling

Well. Seems that the trails are all covered in snow again! We’re also in a freeze-thaw cycle, and trails will be especially susceptible to damage with all this moisture. Don’t ride during the day if it froze last night. Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Also, there is logging happening on Underwood. Do not enter closed areas. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, and the gate is still closed at Binn’s Hill.
