Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Half a foot of snow fell last night under windy conditions. You know where to look to find your powder stashes. Conditions on the windward slopes will likely be slush down low and hard-frozen granular up high. Avoid. Looking into the future, we see the Euro pulling in line with the GFS on snowfall total amounts. By Wednesday, we’ve got a good shot at 2-3 feet of additional snowfall. Great news!

Saturday starts with orographic snow flurries and plenty of wind. There’s half a foot of new snow on the ground. Chains/traction tires are required today. If you’ve removed your studs, make sure you’ve got chains. Your best chance of sunshine is this morning. Another snowy system moves in this afternoon. The snow level will be 2000′ to start the day and will fall to 1000′ or so by Sunday morning. About 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast by 5pm, for a couple inches of new. Another 0.2” WE is forecast tonight, for 2-3” more. Wind/ NW 20-30 this morning, W 30 this afternoon, and W 40-50 overnight.

Strong wind Sunday morning fades a bit during the day. Flurries might stop midday, but heavy snow is forecast overnight. The snow level will be 1000′ in the morning, 2000’ish in the afternoon, and could drop as low as 0-500′ overnight. Details are not totally clear due to model discrepancy, and heck, they may not be clear until the moment actually comes. That said, significant snow is forecast. During the day, just 0.2” WE for a couple inches of snow. Overnight: 0.8” WE for 8-10” more. Wind will be W 40-50 in the morning, WNW 30 midday, and then probably switch to WSW then ESE overnight, but again, details aren’t clear.

Low snow levels continue on Monday with significant snowfall possible. Best case scenario is 2-3 feet. Worst case is at least a foot. You might even see snow at your house. Lighter snowfall and cold temps continue through Tuesday. After that, we’ll have dry weather, most likely, but models are all over the map. So… generally speaking, cold and snowy through Tuesday. Great news for the snowpack!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

A couple more days of westerlies are on tap, but temps won’t be as warm as they’ve been recently. For Saturday, we start with gradients of .09 and .08 and westerlies in the teens and 20’s. Mid-morning wind picks up to gusty 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 22-25 east of The Dalles to Arlington. Wait until mid-afternoon, and you’ll find gusty 25-29 from Mosier eastward with 18-23 in the western Gorge. River flow is 146kcfs, river temp is 46F, and high temp forecast is 49F.

Sunday starts with 15-20 west of Stevenson and variable wind to 10mph from Stevenson to Arlington; it’ll likely be calmish near Hood River. As a front moves in, the wind picks up to 22-25 from The Dalles to Arlington between 11am and 3pm with 7-10 in the western Gorge. By sunset, the wind will be very light, and it will turn easterly overnight. Monday starts with E 30-35 near Rooster with E 10-20 east of Hood River. The wind turns light westerly in the afternoon. Oh, and it could be snowing on Monday morning….

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cycling

Remember the rule: if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing or exposed to the open air now, don’t ride it. You’ll do significant damage. Just wait until tomorrow. It’s not far away! If you ride in the mud, you not only mess up your bike, you do significant damage to the trails. Your brown pow is coming. Go shred the mountain until the trails dry out! Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, judging by Strava.
