Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Quite the storm was predicted, and it’s quite the storm that’s slammed into Mt. Hood overnight. Temps at 5000′ flirted with 32, but never quite made it there. While the snow that fell last night is quite dense (8” with 1.25” water), it stayed snow. We now turn our attention to today’s massive accumulation and strong wind. Tomorrow sees light snowfall continue with strong wind through the morning, at least. That’s all followed by sunshine on Wednesday. Get it early, because temps will skyrocket past freezing in the afternoon and mess up all that powder! We then have a couple more warm days before we transition back into (details unclear) cooler and perhaps snowy weather.

Monday started off with very heavy snowfall and strong wind. 8” of Cascade Concrete fell overnight, but the snow will turn lighter today. That said, strong wind is going to impact snow quality, and resorts may or may not be able to run lifts. The snow level will be 4000′ this morning, 1500-2000′ this afternoon, and 1000′ near Mt. Hood tonight. About 1.6” WE is forecast today, for 15-20” of snow. Add in the orographics, and we could pick up nearly two feet. Overnight, another 0.8” WE is forecast. Orographic assistance, check. 9-14” powder. Wind: W 60 early, W 45-50 midday, W 50-55 in the evening, and W 40-45 overnight. That’s “highly unlikely” for quad chairs and a bit maybe for the doubles.

Tuesday starts out windy with snow flurries. Light snowfall mixed with sun breaks is the forecast for the afternoon before the sky clears overnight. The snow level will be (near Mt. Hood) 1000′-1500′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon. The free air freezing level overnight will be 0′ with temps at 5000′ near -4C. Models call for 0.1” to 0.2” WE during the morning, for 1-3” powder. Just a trace falls in the afternoon if anything. Wind: W 40-45 prior to dawn, NW 40 midday (very problematic) and W 20-25 in the afternoon. Overnight, the wind turns light and variable.

Wednesday starts out clear. Move fast. The free air freezing level (FAF) goes from 0′ in the morning to 8000′ in the afternoon and 11,000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: Light/variable early, S 10-20 in the afternoon, and SW 5-15 overnight. Thursday looks clear and warm with sticky snow and high temps nearing 60. Friday starts high overcast, but it still looks warm. We’re back to cooler, perhaps snowy weather for the weekend, but models are very unclear about the extended forecast details.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

The beastly storm system overhead right now will bring strong and gusty westerlies today. Tomorrow: strong westerlies. Wednesday: back to easterlies for a day. Thursday: easterlies and quite warm! Details on Monday include a strong cold front pushing through. Today’s wind will be driven more by factors related to this system than our normal pattern. Therefore, it shall be gusty. By late morning, westerlies pick up to gusty 15-25 between Rooster and Mosier. Somewhere between Lyle and Avery, the wind starts to get a lot stronger thanks to downsloping and mixing. You’ll find very gusty 30-40 in the desert today, but you’re also likely to find rain at times. River flow is 152kcfs, river temp is 45F, and that’s tied with the high temp for today.

Tuesday sees offshore high pressure and inland low pressure. That high pressure will push inland and likely turn the wind a bit fluky. That said, we starts the day with 24-28 and scattered sprinkles form Stevenson to The Dalles. Avery to Boardman stats the day with 28-33. Midday wind jumps to 30-35 from Lyle or The Dalles to Arlington. Afternoon: 28-32 from The Dalles (or Lyle) to Threemile with gusty 12-15 in the western Gorge under partly cloudy sky. High temp: 51F. Wednesday starts sub-freezing with easterlies at 10-15 from Rooster to Viento. By mid-morning, the wind builds to 25-30 from Rooster to Viento and holds all day. East of Viento, the wind climbs to 10-15 in the afternoon. High temp: 60F. Thursday: easterlies with high temps nearing 70F. It’s back to strong westerlies Friday.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Heavy rain this morning gives way to rain and strong wind this afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 40’s all day. Chance of thunder. 99.99% chance of rainbows and 99% chance of double rainbows. Tuesday starts with intermittent mist perhaps mixed with a few wet snowflakes, but probably not. The weather turns dry after 2pm, perhaps quite a bit earlier. Temps will be in the mid-upper 30’s early and low 50’s later. Strong westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Wednesday starts clear and cold with temps near 30. The afternoon will be sunny and near 60. Calm wind early. Light to moderate easterlies later. No rainbows.

Cycling

After last night’s rain (0.25” in Hood River and counting), many trails will be too wet to ride. Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, judging by Strava.
