Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Thanks to strong orographic effects, last night’s snowfall exceeded predictions. 2” new fell atop a slushy base that never had a chance to freeze. It’ll probably ride buttery smooth today. We then head into a relatively calm Sunday morning followed by 48 hours of very stormy, very snowy weather. The mountains could easily pick up 2-3 feet at 5000′ and more above that!

Saturday starts with light snowfall. That’ll decrease during the day and leave us with afternoon sunshine. High clouds move in overnight. The snow level will be 3000′ this morning, 3500′ this afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. Up to 1” of additional snow could fall before the snow ends. Wind: W 30-35 this morning, W 15-20 this afternoon, and SW 10-15 overnight.

Sunday starts with high clouds and turns cloudier and cloudier until the clouds start to fall in the form of snowflakes. We’ll see heavy snow that transitions to mixed precipitation at 5000′ in the wee hours of Monday morning. The snow level will be 4000′ during the day and will rise to 5500′ after midnight. About 0.7” water equivalent (WE) is forecast overnight, for 4-7” new snow. Wind: SW 10-15 in the morning, SW 15-30 in the afternoon and evening, and WSW 40-65 overnight.

Monday will probably start with mixed precip (and iced-up lifts), but it will transition to snow by sunrise. We’re then looking at a very stormy day with a good chance lifts won’t be running thanks to wind. The snow level will be 5500′ early, 4000′ by sunrise, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. About 1.4” WE is forecast during the day, for 12-17” new snow. Another 0.9” WE is forecast overnight, for 10-12” dry, but wind-affected, powder. Wind could enhance these already-impressive snowfall amounts. We’re expecting WSW 40-65 early, W 50 at daybreak (bye, lifts), WSW 40-55 in the afternoon, and WNW 45-55 overnight.

Expect wind-affected deep snow to start the day on Tuesday. Light snowfall continues with the snow level between 1000′ and 2000′ with strong WNW wind. Clear sky and cold temps Wednesday sets up an epic day of packed powder and powder stashes. That all sounds fabulous, doesn’t it? Keep it coming, Mother Nature!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies continue for the next four days as a series of weather systems impacts the PNW. Saturday starts with weak offshore high pressure. A frontal system approaches this afternoon and destabilizes the wind field. Even so, you’ll be able to get on the river. The day starts with 15-25 all through the Gorge except drizzly Stevenson, where it’s 5-10mph. In the afternoon, the wind picks up to gusty 17-21 (and the rain stops) between Stevenson and Doug’s with 22-25 east of The Dalles to Arlington. River flow is 159kcfs, river temp is 45F, and high temp forecast is 57F.

Sunday daytime is the transition period ahead of a very strong weather system dropping in from the NW. The day starts calm. By midday, the wind rises to gusty 12-15 in the west with gusty 18-23 from Lyle to Threemile. It’s possible we’ll see gusty 22-27 east of The Dalles mid-afternoon on through the evening. High temp: 59F. Monday will be very rainy with a chance of afternoon thunder. The day starts with W 15-25 west of Hood River with light westerlies to the east. The doesn’t last. As this system pushes through, the wind jumps to gusty, rainy, 20-30 west of Lyle with gusty 30-35+ from Lyle to Boardman. High temp: 51F. Tuesday’s forecast is currently W 27-31, and Wednesday’s is E 30-35.

Cycling

It’s brown pow season with perfect dirt. Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, judging by Strava. Better get it now before the rain comes!
