Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Just when you thought it was safe to pack up your ski gear for the season, we’ve got a giant storm headed our way! Models don’t yet agree on the details, but this beast will swing inland Sunday evening and stick around through Tuesday. We’ll likely see a period of mixed precip at 5000′ on Sunday night, but by Monday morning, it’s all snow, all the time, with significant assistance from orographics (read: storm skiing).

Friday starts out high overcast and sub-freezing. You Nordic skiers will be happy to know that all of Meadows Nordic was reverse tilled this morning and should be 11/10 quality. Elsewhere: frozen granular softening to corn and lasting thanks to intermittent high overcast. A big of snow moves in tonight. The snow level will be 2500′ this morning, 6000′ in the afternoon, 4000′ in the evening, and 1500-2000′ overnight. About 0.1” water equivalent (WE) will fall tonight, for an inch of new. Wind: W 5-10 this morning, W 15 this afternoon, W 30 in the evening, and WNW 30-40 overnight.

Saturday starts with strong wind a few flurries. There should be sunbreaks during the day and increasing high clouds late in the day. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. Just a trace of snow is expected. Wind starts at WNW 30-40 and fades to SW 5-15 in the afternoon.

Sunday daytime looks increasingly cloudy. Snow arrives around 5pm, probably transitions to mixed precip overnight, and turns back to snow by Monday morning. This will make a big mess of this lifts overnight. The snow level will be 4000′ during the day, briefly 5500-6000′ overnight, and back to 5000′ by Monday morning. Models still have some coalescing to do around precip totals, but they’re currently calling for up to 1.0” WE overnight. That’s probably half snow at 5000′, for 4-6” with 8-11” above 6000′. Wind: SW 10-15 in the morning build to SW 20-30 in the afternoon, and WSW 30-50 overnight.

Monday looks very windy, W 50mph. That could be enough to shut down the quad chairs – it’s going to be close. The snow level will be 5000′ during the day and will steadily drop to 1000′ by Tuesday morning. Thanks to orographic assistance, we’re currently looking at 2-2.7” WE for a couple feet of new snow. Orographic snow continues on Tuesday morning with strong NW wind and the snow level around 1000-1500′. So much for winter being over!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light and variable wind starts your Friday, but there will be westerlies of some sort all the way through Tuesday. With a lot of rain moving in, you’ll probably have to head way out east to find steady wind. Looking at Friday, we have a light start. By early afternoon, westerlies pick up to 11-14 from Stevenson to Mosier. Wait a couple hours, and you’ll have gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 7-10 east of there. River flow is 146kcfs, river temp is 45F, and high temp is 60F.

Saturday starts with offshore high pressure and adds a trough dropping south from the Alaska area. This starts our day with W 10-13 in the western Gorge and 22-25 from Avery to Boardman. Due to all the movement, it won’t be a consistent day; afternoon brings 22-25 from Avery to Rufus with 11-14 east of there and 7-11 in the western Gorge. By early evening, the wind goes very light or nearly calm. Sunday starts with light westerlies. A beast of a front approaches and kicks the afternoon wind up to gusty 18-23 from Lyle to Arlington with 10-13 west of Lyle. High temp: 58F. Monday: very strong westerlies in the eastern Gorge. Tuesday: also strong out east, and probably steadier than Monday. Wednesday: easterlies at 30-40. Enjoy!

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Cycling

It’s brown pow season with perfect dirt. Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, judging by Strava. Better get it now before the rain comes!
