Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Not much is happening over the next several days on Mt. Hood. Generally speaking, we’ll have warm temps through Tuesday. A cold front with limited moisture takes temps below freezing on Wednesday and holds them there for several days. Forecast uncertainty skyrockets after Friday, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Looking at Sunday, we have a slight snap to the snow. That’s probably going to set us up for a slushy day, but lack of sunshine will keep the snow less slushy than yesterday, most likely. Still, you’ll want to use warm (yellow) wax. High clouds stick around all day. An afternoon or evening thunderstorm isn’t out of the question, but it’s also not all that likely. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 10,000′ all day and will drop to 7000′ after midnight. Wind: E 15 or less this morning, W 5-10 this afternoon, and S 5 overnight. In other words: light and variable.

Cloudy sky during the day on Monday adds some sprinkles or even a bit of drizzle in the afternoon and overnight. The snow level will be 7000′ in the morning and will slowly fall to 6000′ overnight. It’s impossible to predict where the heaviest showers will set up; anything from a trace to 0.4” rain is possible. Most likely it’ll be the lower end of that. During the day, it’s unlikely we’ll see measurable precip. Wind: S 5 in the morning, NW 20-25 in the afternoon, and NW 10 overnight.

Tuesday looks sunny on the slopes and cloudy below. The FAF will be 6000′ in the morning, 10,000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ overnight as a mostly dry cold front arrives (we’ll see precip from it Wednesday). Wind: NW 10-15 in the morning, W 10-20 in the afternoon, and W 30 overnight.

1-3” of snow are forecast on Wednesday with the snow level at 1500′ early and 3000′ in the afternoon. Wind will max out at NW 35-40 in the morning, which could give us a bit of orographic assistance for snowfall along with slowed lifts. We’re back to cold, sunny weather on Thursday. Have a great Sunday and a great week!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Not much wind is forecast for Sunday, but have three days of westerlies planned after that. Sunday starts with E 10-15 between Rooster and Viento. The wind drops to 10mph midday and goes calm after noon. Rest of the Gorge: basically calm all day. River flow is 143kcfs, river temp is 44F, and high temp forecast is 69F. Monday will have some showers, and the wind will be gusty. However, it’ll be westerly. The day starts with 7-10 between Stevenson and The Dalles. It builds to 11-14 midday in that same stretch with 5-10mph out east. We then have a slow and steady build to 22-25 from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon. Showers and instability will affect wind quality through the region but especially west of The Dalles. High temp: 62F.

Tuesday starts with 14-17 from Stevenson to Mosier with 10-13 in the eastern Gorge. An approaching front nudges the wind up in the afternoon. You’ll find gusty W 15-18 at Stevenson with gusty 21-25 from Viento to The Dalles. With this setup, Swell is likely to underperform. Rufus joins late in the day. High temp forecast is 59F. Current wind forecast for Wednesday is clouds and drizzle in the west with 25-29mph east of The Dalles. Enjoy!

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

High clouds stick around today. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and near 70 later. Calm wind. No rainbows. Monday will be cloudy with scattered sprinkles. Temps will be near 50 early and in the low 60’s later. Light westerlies in the morning. Moderate to strong westerlies in the afternoon. 49% chance of rainbows. Tuesday looks mostly cloudy in the morning and mostly clear in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and upper 50’s later. Moderate to strong westerlies. No rainbows.

Cycling

It’s brown pow season with perfect dirt. BUT NOT AT POST CANYON. I saw bikes covered in trails (mud) coming out of there Tuesday. If you ride when it’s muddy, you’ll do permanent damage. Stop it! There’s plenty of time to ride Post this spring and summer and next fall. Ride Syncline or somewhere else! Cows will be going in very soon on Hospital Hills, perhaps today. Once they are in, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Dirty Fingers hosts the “Best of Mountain Sports” Film Festival on March 26th at 7pm.

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. There’s a shop mountain bike ride with the Mountain View Cycles crew at Syncline on Wednesday evenings at 5:45pm.The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle on Sunday at 11am at the Event Site.
