Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Pretty much nothing happened on Mt. Hood yesterday – light wind and warm, dry weather. Dry weather continues, more than likely, through the weekend. Our next chance of precip appears to be late Sunday or early Monday, but there’s a giant temp range between the GFS and Euro. No way to know yet if we’ll see rain or snow on the slopes.

For Wednesday, expect a mostly clear and warm start. A weak cold front moves in and brings light precip this afternoon and evening. Today’s snow level starts at 10,000′, falls to 6000′ in the afternoon, and drops to 4000′ overnight. Just a trace of rain is forecast during the day. Overnight, models suggest 0.05” to 0.1” split between rain (mostly) and snow (up to 1/2”). Wind: SW 10-25 in the morning, W 25 in the afternoon, and E 10 overnight.

Thursday looks high overcast. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 4000′ in the morning, 9000′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ after midnight. NO precip. Wind: E 10 in the morning, SW 5-15 in the afternoon, and E 15 overnight. Friday looks high overcast early and partly cloudy later. The FAF starts at 7000′ and drops to 6000′ wind light SW wind. Models aren’t quite in agreement on the weekend weather, but they’ve been trending downwards in precipitation and are currently calling for dry, cloudy weather on Saturday and morning Sunshine on Sunday. As mentioned above, the next precip is forecast for Monday, but temps are all over the map. We’ll have to hold off on any detailed predictions. Happy Wednesday. Have a great rest of the week on the slopes!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Today’s your day for a round of stronger westerlies, but you’ll have to wait out the morning easterlies. Expect E 10-20 between Rooster and Viento to start with light and variable wind elsewhere. Early in the afternoon, westerlies pick up to gusty 13-16 west of The Dalles. East of there, you’ll find 27-31 between Avery and Threemile. It’s possible the stronger westerlies could fill in from Mosier eastward, but it’s definitely not a sure thing. For best results, head to the desert. River flow is 151kcfs, river temp is 42F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 63F. Arlington: 66F.

Thursday starts dead calm. Easterlies pick up to 20-25 at Rooster and 25-30 at Stevenson midday before fading to 10-20. Afternoon easterlies pick up to 5-10mph from Hood River eastward. High temp: 62F. Friday starts calm. An offshore weak system nudges the wind up to gusty 12-15 between Stevenson and The Dalles in the afternoon. High temp: 65F. Nothing spectacular is currently slated for the weekend: light/variable wind Saturday and W 13-16 Sunday, subject to change.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cycling

It’s brown pow season with perfect dirt. BUT NOT AT POST CANYON. I saw bikes covered in trails (mud) coming out of there yesterday. If you ride when it’s muddy, you’ll do permanent damage. Stop it! There’s plenty of time to ride Post this spring and summer and next fall. Ride Syncline or somewhere else! Dirty Fingers hosts the “Best of Mountain Sports” Film Festival on March 26th at 7pm.

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. There’s a shop mountain bike ride with the Mountain View Cycles crew at Syncline on Wednesday evenings at 5:45pm.The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle on Sunday at 11am at the Event Site.
