Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s Tuesday morning, and last night’s weather was rainy on Mt. Hood. Before that, a couple inches of new snow fell on the ground. Will it be sticky or just fun? You’ll have to go and see! We’re looking at warm and intermittently cloudy weather the next couple of days followed by increasing sunshine and temps in the 40’s. Models still don’t agree on the weather from Saturday onward, but they are trending warmer and drier.

It’s clear on the mountain this morning. Models suggest we’ll stick with the clear sky through tomorrow morning. Expect warm temps – the free air freezing level (FAF) will be around 10,000′ all day with temps at 5000′ rising to nearly 50F. Wind: NW 10-20 early, SE 10 this afternoon, and SW 10-20 overnight.

Wednesday sees a very weak weather system swing through after a clear start to the day. This drags in clouds up to 6500′ or so, which may or may not be enough to drop a little mist on the slopes. Overnight, temps drop and the sky clears. The snow level will be 10,000′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon and evening, and 5500′ after midnight. Just a bit of mist is forecast during the day. Overnight, up to 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast. That could bring up to 1/2” snow at 5000′. Wind: SW 10-20 in the morning, W 20-25 in the afternoon, and E 10 after midnight.

Thursday starts clear, turns high overcast, and becomes clear and sunny in the afternoon. No precip. The FAF will be 5500′ early, variable mid-morning, and 10,000′ in the afternoon. Wind: E 10-15 in the morning and SW 10-20 from mid-afternoon on. As of this morning, Friday looks clear. The weekend is trending drier and warmer after an initial snow-filled prediction. Shoot. Have a great week!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Easterlies, westerlies, easterlies. That’s the plan for the next few days. For Tuesday, the river starts out nearly completely calm. By late morning, easterlies start up. The wind peaks in the afternoon with 20-25 at Rooster, 15-20 at Stevenson, 10-15 at Viento, and 5-10 to the east, all the way to Arlington. River flow is 148kcfs, river temp is 42F, and high temp forecast is 64F.

Wednesday starts with E 5-15 at Stevenson to Rooster. As a front swings through, offshore pressure reading increase, and temps climb in the desert, westerlies arrive. You’ll find clouds and sprinkles with westerlies in the teens west of The Dalles. Avery to Threemile is the better region – out there, the wind rises to gusty 27-31. High temp Hood River: 62F. Arlington: 67F. Thursday starts with E 20-25 at Stevenson and Rooster. The wind briefly rises to 25-30 and then drops to 20-25 in the afternoon. East of Viento, the wind starts light and climbs to E 10mph.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Epic conditions are coming for much of next week when the weather will be dry and temps will climb to 60+. Cows go in next week on Hospital Hill, so ride it while it’s poo-free and remember that your dog is banned from Kreps land once the cows move in. Keep an eye on the HRATS social media for work party announcements – it’s trailbuildling season!
