Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Light snowfall this morning becomes moderate snowfall midday for perhaps half a foot of new snow. Light snowfall continues on Sunday, but we’ll transition to light rain Monday afternoon. After that, we’re looking at several days of true spring skiing with valley temps rising well into the 60’s. Teacup has a skate race today, and the Strava Nordic race continues at Meadows through this weekend. The first 10 people to complete all the segments get a Gorge is my Gym t-shirt a a free year’s subscription.

Looking at Saturday, the snow level started at about 4500′ with a rain/snow mix at Teacup and snow at the base of Meadows and Timberline. The snow level will drop to 3500′ this morning, 2000′ this afternoon, and 1000′ tonight under clear sky. About 0.5” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day today, for 4-6” new. Another 0.2” WE is forecast tonight with orographic assistance for 2-3” powder. Okay… so we could see more than half a foot of snow from this system! Wind today: a quick build to WSW 20-30 this morning turning to WNW 25-30 midday, WNW 30-35 this afternoon, and W 30 overnight.

Sunday starts with clear sky and quickly turns high overcast. Light snow moves in midday and continues on and off through the evening. The snow level will be 1000′ near Mt. Hood in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ overnight. About 0.2” WE is forecast during the day, for 2-3” powder. A trace is forecast overnight. Wind: W 30 in the morning, NW 15-25 midday, W 15 in the afternoon, and SW 5-15 overnight.

Monday starts with light snow and transitions to light rain, but only 0.2” WE total is forecast. The snow level will be 1500′ early. By 11am or so, the snow level rises to 5500′ (so go early) and continues to climb. It maxes out at 8000′ overnight. Wind: SW 5-15mph all day becoming NW 10-20 after midnight. After that: much warmer, sunnier weather for at least a few days. Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

A cold front swinging through combines with offshore high pressure for a windy day today, but you wouldn’t know it looking at the river at 6:30am: there’s no wind at all. By mid-morning, the wind builds to gusty 20-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles with light wind out east. Afternoon: gusty 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 28-33 from Avery to Threemile. River flow is 147kcfs, river temp is 42F, and high temp forecast is 50F.

Sunday starts with W 7-10 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. Afternoon wind picks up to 12-15 from The Dalles to Arlington. High temp: 48F. Monday looks calm all day with drizzle in the morning and afternoon and dry weather in between. High temp: 52F. Easterlies return on Tuesday will sunshine and warmer weather.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Cycling

The brown pow was spectacular yesterday, but today’s rain may make it a bit slick. Don’t you worry – epic conditions are coming for much of next week when the weather will be dry and temps will climb to 60+. Cows go in next week on Hospital Hill, so ride it while it’s poo-free and remember that your dog is banned from Kreps land once the cows move in. Keep an eye on the HRATS social media for work party announcements – it’s trailbuildling season!
