Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
It’s Tuesday morning, and so far all that’s happening on the mountain is a bunch of wind. Snow starts falling soon and keeps falling overnight. We then head into a few days of dry and intermittently high overcast weather before things turn active: we’ll be picking up large amounts of precipitation that alternates as rain and snow through the middle of next week.
Looking at Tuesday, we have a cold front sliding in from the north with orographic assistance from lower-level west flow. The snow level will be 3000′ this morning, 1500-2000′ this afternoon, 500′ near Mt. Hood in the evening, and down to the surface overnight after the precip clears. We’re expecting about 0.4” water equivalent (WE) today, for 4-5” increasingly dry snow. Another 0.4” fluffy powder is forecast tonight. Wind: NW 25-35 this morning, NW 20-30 this afternoon, W 10 this evening, and NE 10-15 overnight.
Wednesday starts with scattered flurries and quickly turns clear and cold. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 0′ in the morning, 1000′ in the afternoon, and 0′ overnight. Just a few flurries are forecast to fall before sunrise, which sets you up for a stellar powder day and epic, but soft, packed powder groom. Expect sunshine all day long. Perfect! Wind: NE 10-15 early, ESE 10-15 in the afternoon, and SE 15 overnight.
Thursday starts clear and turns high overcast. The FAF will be 0′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: SE 15 early, W 10 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight. High clouds and warmer weather are forecast for Friday and Saturday. The next weather system arrives Saturday night. We’ll then see a rain-snow-rain-snow pattern over the next several days as the jet stream lines up with the pacific Northwest. Have a great day!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Westerlies start the day on Tuesday, but light easterlies return late in the day. We’ll then be in a colder, widespread easterly pattern for a couple of days. Tuesday morning starts with gradients of .11 and .08 with westerlies generally in the teens (Arlington, Swell) and mid 20’s (Rufus, Viento). With rain coming in from the N, it’s just not a good quality wind day. You’ll find gusty 16-20 between Viento and The Dalles through midday. By early afternoon, the wind turns NE 10 east of Celilo. Late afternoon brings light westerlies west of Mosier and light easterlies east of The Dalles. River flow is 165kcfs, river temp is 40F, and high temp forecast is 49F.
Wednesday starts with E 20-25 at Stevenson and Rooster with 15-20 at Viento and 5-10 east of there to Arlington. Afternoon: 10-15 at Stevenson, Rooster, and Viento with E 10 to the east. High temp: 43F. Thursday starts with E 15-20 at Rooster, E 10-15 at Cascade Locks, and finishes up with light westerlies… maybe – models are often too aggressive with returning westerlies to the Gorge. High temp: 50F.
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.
Hood River Weather Forecast
Tuesday will be drizzly all day with a chance of light snow overnight. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and upper 40’s in the afternoon. Moderate westerlies for the first half of the day turn light overnight. 67% chance of rainbows. Wednesday may start with a few flurries, but the sky should clear quickly and stay clear. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and low 40’s later. Light to moderate easterlies. No rainbows. Thursday starts clear and eventually turns high overcast. Temps will be in the upper teens to low 20’s early and near 50 later. Light easterlies turn light westerly in the afternoon. No rainbows.

Cycling
Please be very selective about what trails you ride today – some are too wet. Some are perfect brown pow. Ride those! If you ride the trails when they are muddy, you’ll damage them. Then everyone has to spend time fixing the damage instead of building you new trails. Best responses if you did ride: 1) donate money to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards; 2) show up for as many trail work parties as you can this spring.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. There’s a night-lit shop mountain bike ride with the Mountain View Cycles crew at Syncline on Wednesday evenings at 5:45pm. The Cold Lap mixed surface ride is at Dirty Fingers at 2pm on Sundays. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle on Sunday at 11am at the Event Site The John Craig memorial ski race and tour is March 19th in Sisters on McKenzie Pass. Teacup has the “Glides of Spring” skate race on 3/19. Meadows Nordic has a Strava skate race happening between March 4th and, oh, sometime a few weeks from then.
