Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s another fine, sunny day of corn snow on the slopes. Early conditions will be loose granular over a solid base – fast and forgiving and especially excellent for skate skiing. We’re looking at a couple more days of dry weather followed by a little snow, followed by dry weather and then… lots of precipitation of varying types while I’m out for a week on a meditation retreat. Naturally… something happens while I’m offline!

For Sunday, all you get is sunshine. Expect corn snow by afternoon in all sun-touched locations. The free air freezing level will be 3000′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ overnight. Wind: light north early, NW 5-10 in the afternoon, and NW 15-20 overnight.

Monday starts with some high clouds and keeps them. No precip for the 24 hour period. The freezing level will hover around 6000′ all day and will drop to 4500′ ahead of an incoming cold front overnight. Wind: NW 15-20 in the morning, NW 30-35 in the afternoon, and NW 30-35 overnight.

Tuesday starts high overcast and turns snowy in the afternoon. The snow level will be 4000′ in the morning, 1500′ when the snow starts, and 1000-1500′ overnight. About 0.3-0.4” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the evening for 3-5” powder. Wind: NW 30 in the morning, WNW 40-45 in the afternoon, N 15 around midnight, and variable to 20 after midnight as cold air sweeps in from the east. Wednesday looks colder and sunny after a few morning flurries. High clouds arrive on Thursday ahead of a pattern change. As of now, it looks like precip will hold off until midday Friday, but that could change. As for p-type… currently looks to be rain then very heavy snow, but that could change. Think cold and wet!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

After today (it’s Sunday), we’ll have strong offshore high pressure driving Gorge west wind. For Sunday, there’s won’t be much. We starts with W 10-15 in a couple of locations and light/variable wind almost everywhere. The wind turns light easterly this afternoon, according to the models, but given the offshore high pressure, it’s entirely possible we’ll have light westerlies. Useless forecast! River flow is 151kcfs, river temp is 39F, and high temp forecast is 56F.

Monday starts with W 17-21 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 to the east and 5-10 at Stevenson. The wind picks up – thanks to 1040mb offshore high pressure – to 24-28 (maybe more) from Stevenson to Rufus after 10am. East of there: less. High temp: 57F. Tuesday sees a cold front swing through in the morning. This gives us gusty 17-21 form Viento to Mosier to start with 14-17 east of Mosier to Arlington. Afternoon wind picks up to gusty 24-27 from Viento to Threemile with 10-13 at Stevenson. That said, rain coming from all directions will dampen wind speed and reduce quality after noon. High temp: 49F.

Bonus Coast Forecast (north/central/south, waves; wind N unless otherwise specified). Sunday: NW 5-10/N 15-20/25-030, W swell 8′ at 13 seconds. Monday: W5/N10-15/N25-30, W 4′ @ 13. Tuesday: W 10-15/LTW/N25-30, W 3′ ‘@ 12.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clear sky this morning stays that way all day. Temps will be near freezing early and in the mid 50’s later. Light and variable wind. No rainbows. Monday starts high overcast and stays that way. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and upper 50’s later. Moderate to strong westerlies. NO rainbows. Tuesday starts cloudy and turns drizzly after noon. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Moderate to strong westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows and doubles. Colder air moves in Wednesday night and turns the roads icy for Thursday morning.

Cycling

Please be very selective about what trails you ride today – some are too wet. Some are perfect brown pow. Ride those! If you ride the trails when they are muddy, you’ll damage them. Then everyone has to spend time fixing the damage instead of building you new trails. Best responses if you did ride: 1) donate money to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards; 2) show up for as many trail work parties as you can this spring.

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. There’s a night-lit shop mountain bike ride with the Mountain View Cycles crew at Syncline on Wednesday evenings at 5:45pm. The Cold Lap mixed surface ride is at Dirty Fingers at 2pm on Sundays. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle on Sunday at 11am at the Event Site The John Craig memorial ski race and tour is March 19th in Sisters on McKenzie Pass. Teacup has the “Glides of Spring” skate race on 3/19. Meadows Nordic has a Strava skate race happening between March 4th and, oh, sometime a few weeks from then.
