Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Timberline, Meadows, and Skibowl are all closed today due to the rainy, windy forecast. Will they be back tomorrow for a forecast of rain and mixed precip minus the strong wind? Who knows! The weather turns back to snow at 5000′ on Wednesday morning and stays there for at least the next 10 days or so (assuming we can trust the extended forecast).
For Monday, the mountain picks up a lot of rain as a moderate atmospheric river (aka Pineapple Express) takes aim at Mt. Hood. The snow level rises to 10,000′ this morning, pretty much stays there, and falls to 6500′ after midnight. The latest model run predicts about 2.0” rain today and 0.8” to 1.0” rain tonight. Wind: WSW 40-70 during the day, SW 30-60 in the evening, and W 35 after midnight.
Tuesday starts with rain and ends with snow after midnight. Periods of mixed precip are possible in between. This is likely to make an icy mess of the higher-elevation chair lifts. The snow level fluctuates between 5500′ and 6500′ during the day. It falls for real overnight, landing at 5500′ around 10pm and 5000′ after midnight. About 0.5” rain is forecast during the day. From 4pm onward, the slopes pick up another 1.0” water equivalent (WE). Let’s call that 1/2” rain and 2-4” wet snow. Wind: W 35 in the morning becoming SW 15-25 in the afternoon and W 20 overnight.
Wednesday sees the snow level drop from 5000′ early in the morning to 4000′ in the afternoon to 2500′ after midnight. About 0.1” to 0.2” WE is forecast during the day, for 1-2” snow. Another 0.2” to 0.3” is forecast overnight for 2-3” more. Wind: W 20 early, SW 5-10 in the afternoon, and WSW 10-15 in the evening. Additional snow showers are forecast on Thursday. In a happy twist, the GFS and ECMWF, while not agreeing on details, are agreeing that 850mb temps (5000′) will stay at or below 0C from late Wednesday on through the 15th of March. That’s darn fine news – any precip that arrives should fall as snow. Hooray! For that news, we can forgive today’s rain. Actually, scratch that – we need the rain. We’ve been running behind. It’s all good.
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
With the amount of rain forecast over the next few days, there won’t be much dry time for you on the water. Wind will be gusty too! Monday will be the windiest day. It starts with light easterlies. Mid-morning wind picks up to gusty W 20-30 at Rooster with very gusty SW 20-40 east of The Dalles (unlikely to actually be that strong on the river) with gusty 5-15 in the central Gorge. River flow is 163kcfs, river temp is 37F, and high temp forecast is 52F. Tuesday starts with calm wind near Hood River. West of Swell, you’ll find W 10-15. Same east of The Dalles. Afternoon wind turns to light westerly (less than 10mph) in the west and light/variable east of Mosier. High temp: 54F. Wednesday will be very light westerly or light and variable. High temp: 54F. As of this morning, Thursday-Sunday look like west wind days.
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Cycling
It’s too wet to ride! Don’t do it! You’ll damage the trails. If you damage the trails, people have to spend time fixing them rather than building new trails for you to ride. If you did ride the trails, the best thing you can do is 1) donate money to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards or 2) show up for every single trail work party that happens this spring.
