Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Slightly warmer-than-expect air pushed over Mt. Hood last night and switched the precip over to rain up to 6000′ or so for a bit. The snow level has dropped a bit since daybreak, and will continues to fall today before shooting up tonight. We’re then in for a couple of days of warmer, wetter weather, including an impressively atmospheric river on Monday. Temps drop back down to the happy zone on Thursday after which most models agree they’ll stay there for a while.

Sunday starts with rain at lower slopes and snow on high slopes. If you’re driving to the mountain, be aware of freezing rain and icy roads near Parkdale. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 4000′ this afternoon, 6000′ this evening, and 8000′ after midnight. Just 0.1-0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today, for up to an inch or two of wet snow on the higher slopes. Another 0.2” WE is forecast tonight. That starts as snow and switches to rain. Wind: WSW 30-40 this morning, SW 20-40 this afternoon, and SW 30-55 overnight.

Monday will just be rainy. The snow level will be 8000′ in the morning, 9000′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ overnight. Models predict (probably under-predicting) 2.0” rain during the day and 0.6” rain overnight. Wind: SW 30-55 in the morning, WSW 40-60 in the afternoon (when orographics will really drive up the rainfall rate), and WSW 30-40 after midnight.

The snow level falls from 7000′ Tuesday morning to 5500-6000′ during the day with temps at 5000′ at +3C. About 0.5” rain is predicted during the day with another 0.3” overnight. Wind: WSW 30-40 in the morning, SW 15-25 in the afternoon, and S 15-30 overnight.

Temps start to drop on Wednesday, but the precip doesn’t switch fully to snow until Thursday night. We then shift from a SW-fed setup to a NW flow setup. This leads to colder, less-wet weather with intermittent light snowfall. Of course we’d prefer to have all this moisture as snow, but we’ll take all the moisture we can get in any form. Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

East wind continues this morning but switches around in some places this afternoon. You’ll find E 20 at Rooster and E 10-15 at Stevenson and Viento this morning. The wind fades at Stevenson and eventually turns light/variable this afternoon. Rooster turns to W 10-20. Rest of the Gorge: calm with the far eastern Gorge rising to W 5-10. River flow is 146kcfs, river temp is 36F, and high temp forecast is 47F. Monday starts with W 20-30 near Rooster and calm everywhere else. Cascade Locks picks up to 15-25, the Central Gorge picks up to 5-15, and the eastern Gorge rises to SW 15-25. High temp: 51F. Tuesday will be essentially calm all day. High temp: 55F.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cloudy, drizzly weather continues all day. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and mid 40’s later. Light and variable or calm wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Monday will be rainy all day. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Light west wind. 95% chance of rainbows. Tuesday will be drizzly. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 50’s later. Calm wind. 49% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

FREEZE THAW: It rained enough this week that sub-freezing overnight temps and daytime sunshine will render the trails susceptible to damage. Please, just don’t. You can take a week off riding while the temps moderate. Out in the woods, the trails above 2000′ are snow covered. Down below: brown pow to the east and wet conditions in Post Canyon. Freeze-thaw information: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you will cause significant damage. Then people will have to come fix your messes instead of building new trails. Better idea: gravel and road riding.
