Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

As often happens, easterly orographic snowfall outperformed model predictions last night. We’ll head into several days of cold, dry weather with excellent snow conditions on the ground. If you’re seeking powder, you may find it today on the opposite slopes as usual.

Partly cloudy weather Tuesday morning turns mostly clear in the afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 0′ with temps on the slopes in the single digits. Wind: NE 15 all day long. Wednesday starts out clear and bitterly cold (right around 0F) and warms to the teens under sunny sky in the afternoon. High clouds move in around sunset. Wind: NE 15 early becoming northerly with a slight chance of a downslope windstorm midday. Northerlies continue overnight.

Thursday will be high overcast in the morning. A chance of flurries midday gives way to clear sky in the afternoon and overnight. The snow level will be 0′ in the morning, 1000′ in the afternoon, and 0′ overnight with temps in the upper teens to low 20’s. Wind will be northerly and difficult to predict (but likely strongest mid-mountain) all day long. It’ll turn to E 10 overnight. Friday looks dry and sunny and warmer. The next weather system is forecast for Saturday evening. It’s unclear how much snow we’ll see. Looking seven days out, we see hints of an atmospheric river in the forecast. Predicted temps at 5000′ run from 0C to 5C. Vote for the lowest end of that range, and enjoy the powder today and packed powder this week!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Easterlies moved in last night all through the Gorge, the they’ll stick around in some form through the rest of this week. For Tuesday, you’ll find 10-20 from Hood River to Arlington all day. Stevenson, Rooster, and Viento start at 20-25. Rooster builds to 25-30, and Stevenson/Viento hold. River flow is 149kcfs, river temp is 38F, and high temp forecast is 31F. Brr! Wednesday starts with 30-35 at Rooster, 20-25 at Stevenson, and 5-10 to the east. The wind goes calm east of Swell midday. In the afternoon, Stevenson drops to 10-15 and Rooster drops to 15-20. High temp: 32F. Thursday starts light and variable. Models suggest we’ll see light westerlies west of Viento and light easterlies to the east. Stronger easterlies return for Friday and Saturday.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cycling

Out in the woods, the trails above 2000′ are snow covered. Down below: brown pow to the east and wet conditions in Post Canyon. Freeze-thaw information: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you will cause significant damage. Then people will have to come fix your messes instead of building new trails. Better idea: gravel and road riding.
