Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Steady snowfall today gives way to flurries tonight, partly to mostly clear, very chilly weather on Tuesday, and cold sunshine on Wednesday. Our next chance of precipitation is Sunday, and at this point, it’s looking a bit too warm to fall as snow. Get the epic powder today and the epic packed powder this week!

Presidents’ Day holiday starts with some epic fluffy powder. Mt. Hood picked up about a foot over the last 24 hours. Go get some! The snow level will be 1000-1500′ this morning and will fall to 0′ near Mt. Hood this evening. Be prepared for winter driving conditions – chains are required. About 0.4” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today, for 4-6” of dry powder. A trace to an inch is forecast tonight as we move into an easterly orographic pattern. Wind: NW 20-30 early, NW 10-15 mid-morning, E 10-15+ this afternoon, and E 15 overnight.

Tuesday starts partly cloudy. Models suggest some clouds will stick around until the evening, when the sky will go clear. A few snow flurries are possible thanks to moderate easterlies pushing clouds up against the east slopes. The snow level will be 0′. Temps on the slopes will be in the single digits. Wind: E 15 in the morning, ENE 15-20 overnight.

Wednesday will be sunny and frigid in the morning (near 0F) and high overcast and cold (teens) in the afternoon. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 0′ all day. Wind: ENE 15 in the morning, NE5** in the afternoon, and NW 10-15 overnight. **stable air to the height of Mt. Hood and strong north wind could possibly set up some sort of downslope windstorm. Those are very tricky to predict, but be prepared for more wind than expected.

Thursday looks high overcast. A few flurries are possible but far from guaranteed. Temps moderate into the 20’s. Friday looks dry and partly cloudy. Temps warn above freezing by Saturday morning. The predicted timing of the next weather system (snow level 6000′-6500′) is currently next Sunday morning. Have a great week on the slopes!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies gradients on Monday morning quickly turn to the east as a cold front slides in from the east and a low drops in along the west side. By late morning or early afternoon, we’ll have light/variable wind in the western Gorge and E 15-25 east of The Dalles. Those easterlies fill in during the afternoon. Rooster tops out at 30-35, and the rest of the Columbia, all the way to Arlington, will be 15-30mph. River flow is 146kcfs, river temp is 38F, and high temp forecast is 42F.

Tuesday starts with E 30-40 at Rooster, 20-25 at Cascade Locks, and 10-20 east of there to Arlington. Afternoon: 25-30 at Rooster, 15-20 at Stevenson, and 15-25 in the eastern Gorge. High temp: 32F. Wednesday sees the eastern Gorge go calm. Rooster Starts with 35-40 and drops to 15-20. Cascade Locks starts with 15-20, briefly rises to 20-25, and falls to 10-15 in the afternoon. High temp: 33F.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Partly cloudy sky this morning turns cloudy this afternoon and adds mixed rain and snow flurries. Less than 1” at river level. Temps will max out in the low 40’s and fall as the day goes on. Calm wind early. Moderate to strong easterlies later. 17% chance of rainbows. Tuesday starts partly cloudy, cold, and slick. Temps will be in the low 20’s early and low to mid 30’s later. Moderate easterlies. No rainbows. Wednesday will be clear and cold and dry with high clouds possible in the afternoon. Temps will be in the teens early and low to mid 30’s later. Light east wind. No rainbows.

Cycling

Out in the woods, the trails above 2000′ are snow covered. Down below: brown pow to the east and wet conditions in Post Canyon. Freeze-thaw information: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you will cause significant damage. Then people will have to come fix your messes instead of building new trails. Better idea: gravel and road riding.
