Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Yesterday afternoon’s storm system delivered the goods to Mt. Hood. Moderate to strong overnight wind without much additional snowfall may have been detrimental to snow quality, but it’s still looking like a good day on the slopes. The rest of this week is looking mostly dry and mostly sunny, but we have another weather system planned for sometime between late Saturday and Sunday.
So, Mt. Hood picked up about 9” of snow in the last 24 hours. That’s going to make for some really nice groom! A few lingering snow flurries give way to clear sky this afternoon and then some low-level precip tonight. The snow level will be 2500′ this morning and will fall to 1500-2000′ this afternoon. Just a trace of precip is forecast tonight, and just down low; given the lack of deeper moisture, it may not be able to form snowflakes and could fall as some sort of ice crystals or drizzle or perhaps nothing at all. Slopes above 4000′ should stay clear. Wind: NW 10-15 this morning, NNW 25-30 this afternoon, and NW 40 overnight.
Wednesday starts off mostly clear up high with clouds below 4000′. A bit of precip is possible during the day down low, and again, it could make snowflakes, and it might not. Total will be less than 0.1” water equivalent. Snow level: 1500-2000′ all day rising to 4000′ overnight. Wind: NW 40-45 in the morning, N 5-15 in the afternoon, and WNW 10-15 overnight.
Thursday will be clear in the morning and cloudy in the afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 4000′ in the morning and will rise to 7000′ in the afternoon. No precip. Wind: WNW 10-15 in the morning, NW 25-30 in the afternoon, and NW 15-20 overnight. Friday looks clear with the freezing level at 6500′ and moderate NW wind. Saturday starts clear. It’s uncertain when the next storm will hit – sometime between Saturday and Sunday. Models predict anywhere between 0.25 to 1.25” water equivalent of snow out of this system. Vote for the higher end of that!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
This week’s wind will feel a lot more like May than February – several days of solid westerlies. Even the temps, in the upper 40’s, will feel warmer than you’d expect this time of year. Tuesday starts with gradients of .08 and .05 with westerlies in the teens most places. Offshore high pressure sits at 1037mb. By mid-morning, the wind builds to 22-25 from Viento to Rufus with 14-17 to the east and gusty 10-13 west of Viento. Models hint at 25-28 for a few hours this afternoon between Mosier and Doug’s, perhaps extending to Rufus. River flow is 139kcfs, river temp is 37F, and high temp forecast is 47F.
Wednesday starts with strong westerlies: 22-26 from Viento to Rufus with 14-17 east of Rufus and 5-15 near Cloudy, drizzly Stevenson. Drizzle ends after 10am. Models hint at the gradients slackening after 10am as well, but the wind should still hold at 21-24 or more between Viento and Rufus for the rest of the day. Stevenson may pick up into the upper teens to low 20’s depending on cloud cover. The eastern Gorge is likely to drop into the low teens. High temp: 47F. Thursday starts with 12-15 and builds to 25-29 from Viento to Arlington. High temp: 46F. Models suggest 17-20mph for Friday. That’s a LOT of west wind for the middle of February!
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Cycling
Out in the woods, the trails above 2000′ are snow covered. Freeze-thaw information: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you will cause significant damage. Then people will have to come fix your messes instead of building new trails. Better idea: gravel and road riding.
