Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Some good news this morning – snow is expected today. While high pressure will be present offshore this week (and into the extended forecast picture), it will be just far enough away for weak systems to sneak in from the NW intermittently this week and perhaps next.
For Monday, snow starts up early, sticks around all day, and tapers off overnight. The snow level will be 3000′ early and 2000′ from mid-morning on. About 0.5-0.6” water equivalent (WE) is expected today, for 5-7” new snow. Another 0.1” to 0.2” is predicted tonight, for another inch or two. Wind will be WSW 30-40 early, NW 30-40 in the afternoon, and NNW 20-30 overnight.
Tuesday starts with orographic snow flurries, turns clear midday as the wind turns northerly, and picks up some snow flurries overnight. The snow level will be 2000′ most of the day, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ overnight. Less than an inch of snow is expected for the 24 hour period. Wind: NNW 20 in the morning, NNW 10-15 in the afternoon, and NNW 30+ overnight.
Flurries on Wednesday morning give way to clear sky by afternoon. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and the freezing level will drop to 1000′ under clear sky overnight. Up to 1” of snow is expect early. We could also see a windstorm as strong upper-level northerly winds sweep down the slopes: NNW 30+ in the morning, NNW 10+ in the afternoon, and N 5-10 overnight. Thursday looks clear with warming – the freezing level rises to 8000′ in the afternoon. The next weather system is predicted for Sunday with a snow level of 2000′. Have a great week!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
West wind is on tap for at least the next three days. Monday starts with W 12-15 everywhere except Arlington where the wind is light easterly. A weather system swings through and leaves us with 22-26 most places between Stevenson and Arlington. That said, it’ll be rainy at Stevenson through late afternoon. Head east of the Cascades for sunshine and the strongest wind. River flow is 144kcfs, river temp is 37F, and high temp forecast is 47F.
Tuesday starts with 14-17 from Stevenson to Arlington as offshore high pressure sets up at 1037mb. The wind builds to 23-26 (could beat that) from Stevenson to Rufus with 10-13 to the east. High temp: 48F. Wednesday starts with 24-28 from Viento to Mosier with 20-23 east to Arlington. Stay in the central Gorge for best results – the wind will drop off to 20-23 form Stevenson to The Dalles with lighter wind to the east. High temp: 48F.
Coast, Jones, Coast

Hood River Weather Forecast
Mostly cloudy sky this morning adds some drizzle and turns partly cloudy this afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 40’s this morning and upper 40’s later. Moderate to strong westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with plenty of sunbreaks. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Moderate to strong westerlies. No rainbows. Wednesday will be mostly cloudy in the morning and mostly clear in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Moderate to strong westerlies. NO rainbows.

Cycling
Out in the woods, the trails above 2000′ are snow covered. Freeze-thaw information: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you will cause significant damage. Then people will have to come fix your messes instead of building new trails. Better idea: gravel and road riding.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. There’s a night-lit shop mountain bike ride with the Mountain View Cycles crew at Syncline on Wednesday evenings at 5:45pm. This Sunday, 3pm, is the annual Chili and Cornbread Cookoff at Dirty Fingers. Come watch the Super Bowl and crown some winners. On other Sundays, meet at the shop at 2pm for the Cold Lap. The Renewal Workshop in Cascade Locks has their annual in-person sale through Monday. The John Craig memorial ski race and tour is March 19th in Sisters on McKenzie Pass.
