Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Sunshine is the plan for the entire weekend. Snow is forecast during the day on Monday followed by a few flurries mixed with sun until Wednesday. After that… dry weather for a couple days and then at least some chance of another round of snow.
Saturday will be sunny all day. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 10,000′ in the morning, 11,000′ in the afternoon, and 10,000′ overnight. Temps max out near 50F at 5000′. Wind sensors at 5am were reading 5-10, and there won’t be much more wind than that: SE 10-20 this morning, SE 5-15 this afternoon, and W 15 overnight.
Another round of sunshine is in the cards all day Sunday. The FAF will be 10,000′ all day and will fall to 6500′ after midnight. No precip. Max temps will be in the low 40’s at 5000′. Wind: W 15 in the morning, SW 5-15 in the afternoon, and WSW 20-30 after midnight.
Monday starts partly cloudy. Snow starts up by 7am. The snow level will be 6500′ prior to sunrise, 2000′-2500′ when the snow hits and about the same for the rest of the day and night. Models call for 0.4-0.6” water equivalent (WE), giving us about 4-6” snow during the day and 1-2” overnight. W and NW wind could add to that, giving us 5-9” new. Wind: WSW 20-30 early, WSW 30-40 at sunrise, and NW 25-35 mid-afternoon on through the evening.
Flurries continue on Tuesday with plenty of sunshine thrown into the mix. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning and 1500-2000′ from mid-morning on through the evening. Wind: NW 25-35 early, NW 15-20 in the afternoon, and NW 25-35 after midnight. Moisture will be relegated to lower elevations on Wednesday. Despite cold temps, this could result in freezing mist thanks to the limited depth of moisture. Clear sky returns on Thursday. Enjoy!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Strong easterlies fade a bit this afternoon, and stick around for Sunday. Westerlies return on Monday and stick around for a few days as offshore high pressure sets up in the sweet spot off the coast. The 5am gradient this morning was 0.22 PDX-DLS, and easterlies were equally robust: 40mph at Rooster. Stevenson will build to 25-35, and Viento will build to 20-25. East of there, the wind starts at 5-10 and picks up to 10-20. No respite from the easterlies anywhere today! River flow is 165kcfs, river temp is 37F, and high temp forecast is 59F.
Sunday starts with 30-35 at Rooster and 20-25 at Stevenson. East of Viento, the wind stays calm all day. Afternoon easterlies drop to 10-15 in the western Gorge. High temp: 55F. Monday starts with W 10-20 west of Swell and east of Rowena. The wind picks up to gusty 18-23 from Stevenson to Boardman in the afternoon. Models suggest W 15-18 on Tuesday, but it’s quite likely they’ll beat that. Let’s go with 21-24 east of Hood River. Stronger wind is currently forecast for Wednesday, but that’s a long ways out for the forecast to be reliable.
Coast, Jones, Coast

Hood River Weather Forecast
Clear sky this morning stays that way. Temps will be near freezing early and near 60 later. Moderate easterlies. No rainbows. Sunday will be sunny. Temps will be near freezing early and in the mid 50’s later. Calm wind. No rainbows. Monday brings a bit of drizzle. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and mid 40’s later. Moderate westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows.

Cycling
Out in the woods, the trails above 1500′-2000′ are snow covered. Freeze-thaw information: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you will cause significant damage. Then people will have to come fix your messes instead of building new trails. Better idea: gravel and road riding.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. There’s a night-lit shop mountain bike ride with the Mountain View Cycles crew at Syncline on Wednesday evenings at 5:45pm. This Sunday, 3pm, is the annual Chili and Cornbread Cookoff at Dirty Fingers. Come watch the Super Bowl and crown some winners. On other Sundays, meet at the shop at 2pm for the Cold Lap. The Renewal Workshop in Cascade Locks has their annual in-person sale from today through Monday. The John Craig memorial ski race and tour is March 19th in Sisters on McKenzie Pass.
