Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Dry and unseasonably warm weather sticks around for the mountain through the weekend. We then get a bit of snow Sunday night into Monday and Tuesday, perhaps a quarter to a half inch of water value for up to half a foot of new snow. Orographics could add more, and we should all cross our fingers that it does!

Wednesday will be partly cloudy. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 9000′ in the morning and 11,000′ overnight. No precip. Wind will be NW 25-35+ early fading to N 10-20 in the afternoon (expect downslope warming with that) and N 15 overnight.

Thursday will be warm and sunny. The FAF will be 10,000′ or so all day with temps on the slopes rising to 50F in the afternoon. Wind: N 15 in the morning, NW 15-20 in the afternoon, and E 15 overnight. Friday will be sunny and warm, but you will find colder pockets of air scattered about thanks to east wind and a deepening cold pool. The free air freezing level will be 10,000′. Temps max out in the low to mid 50’s at 5000′. Wind: E 15-20 in the morning, SE 20 in the afternoon, and S 5-15 after midnight.

Saturday and Sunday morning also look clear. Our next weather system arrives sometime between Sunday and Monday, but the details are not yet clear. Let’s hope it’s strong enough to break down the ridge of high pressure currently locked in place over the Pacific Northwest!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies stick around through Wednesday afternoon. That’s followed by some back-and-forth on Thursday and easterlies through the weekend. Wednesday starts rather summer-like with gradients of 0.12 and 0.02 and wind in the 20-23 range from Viento to Mosier. The wind will drop to 15-18 midday and fill from Stevenson to Mosier. After noon, the wind drops to 10-13 and reaches from Stevenson to The Dalles. While the eastern Gorge, east of The Dalles, will start at 15-18, it will quickly fade. River flow is 140kcfs, river temp is 36F, and high temp forecast is a balmy 57F.

Thursday starts with E 10-15 from Rooster to Stevenson. The wind turns to W 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River in the afternoon. High temp: 63F! Friday brings strong easterlies. You’ll find 40-50mph at Rooster (perhaps 30ish if the cold pool gets deeper than the Cascades) and 25-30 at Stevenson. High temp: 52F, but perhaps less thanks to the inversion.

Bonus coast forecast (north/central/south, waves). Wednesday: LTN/N25-30/15-25, W swell 7′ at 18 seconds. Thursday: 15-20/25-30/10-15, W 9′ @ 15. Friday: Side-off or offshore 5-15, W 7′ @ 12. Go surfing.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Cycling

Out in the woods, the trails above 1500′-2000′ are snow covered. Freeze-thaw information: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you will cause significant damage. Then people will have to come fix your messes instead of building new trails. Better idea: gravel and road riding.

Local Events
