Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Last night was a very, very windy one on the slopes of Mt. Hood, and today’s snow quality will show the effects of that. It will also show a shift in snow type, but with only 3-6” fresh so far, the switch to packed powder will likely be less than universal. It does, however, look mighty fine on Teacup’s Facebook page: packed powder there! Off piste will be better than dust on crust, but definitely not a mogul-removing snowstorm by any means. Still, we’ll take all the new snow we can get!

Windy, stormy conditions continue today, but limited available moisture keeps the snow totals from being mind-boggling. The snow level will be 2000′ most of the day and will fall to 500′ tonight. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today, for about 3” additional wind-affected snow. Another 0.2” WE is forecast tonight, for a couple more inches of powder. Wind: NW 40-45 this morning, NW 30-35 this afternoon, NW 20-25 after midnight.

Tuesday brings clear or partly cloudy sky in the morning with orographic snow flurries possible at any time. A weak system in the afternoon brings a bit more snow. Expect chilly temps: the snow level will be 500′ in the morning, 1000′ in the afternoon, and 0′ after midnight. Just 0.1” WE is forecast during the day (mostly in the afternoon), for an inch of new. That’s followed by another trace of new snow overnight. Wind: NW 20-30 all day long turning to E 5-10 after midnight.

Clear sky early Wednesday quickly gives way to high clouds, perhaps with the right timing for a stellar mountain sunrise. Clouds thicken during the day, but are unlikely to bring any precipitation. The free air freezing level near Mt. Hood will be 0′ all day long with temps on the slopes in the teens in the morning and low 20’s in the afternoon. Wind: E 5-10 early, NW 10-15 in the afternoon, and NW 10-15 overnight. It’s likely we’ll see some sunshine on the slopes on Thursday. Looking longer-range, models disagree on the details. Generally speaking, it will be mostly dry with weak weather systems dropping in every few days.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Big westerly gradients this morning in the wake of a cold front passing combine with offshore high pressure at 1035mb for a windy day on the river. It won’t be like summer, mind you, but it will be enough to get you out there if you’re looking for some water time. Dress warmly and keep your buddies in sight. The day starts with 30-35 at Viento, 10-15 near Hood River, and 25-28 east of The Dalles. Head east to the sunshine for the best results. Westerlies hold until 1pm or so and then fade to 20-23 in the afternoon. Viento drops to 15-20 in the afternoon. Hood River to Doug’s will probably hold in the 10-15 range. Intermittent rain falls west of The Dalles all day. River flow is 169kcfs, river temp is 37F, and high temp forecast is 44F.

Tuesday starts with W 11-14 from Stevenson to Rufus. The wind picks up to 13-16 from Stevenson to Rufus and holds for the rest of the day. East of Rufus, the wind starts at 5-10 and goes calm. High temp: 43F. Wednesday’s wind goes back to easterlies. Models disagree. Could be 10-15. Could be 25-30. Will definitely be colder.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Cycling

FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!
