Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Stormy weather on Friday morning gives way to clear sky. Sunshine sticks around through most of Saturday. High clouds Sunday morning signal the front edge of the next system. Snow starts up in the afternoon and turns very heavy during the day on Monday into Tuesday.
Thursday’s storm has lasted well into Friday morning; almost two feet of snow fell over the last 24 hours. That’s NW flow for you – blowing the predictions out of the water as always. By late morning or early afternoon, the sky should clear. High clouds may move in overnight. The snow level will be 0′ near Mt. Hood today with about 0.2” water equivalent added to the piles of snow before the snow stops. Call it 2-3” additional powder. Wind will be NW 10-20 in the morning becoming light and variable in the afternoon and W 10 overnight.
Saturday starts with high clouds, turns clear, and turns high overcast again. No new snowfall. Snow level near Mt. Hood will be 0′ all day with 850mb temps at -6C in the morning, -3C in the afternoon, and -2C overnight. Wind: W 10-15 all day with SW wind overnight building to 15-30mph.
Sunday starts high overcast. Clouds build and build. Snow starts up just before sunrise and continues overnight. The snow level will be 0′ near Mt. Hood on the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 5000′ overnight. About 0.3” WE is forecast overnight, mostly after midnight, for 1-3” of dense new snow. Wind will be SW 15-30 in the morning, SW 20-45 in the afternoon, and a very impressive SW 40-80 overnight (which still won’t have the effect on the slopes of W or NW 40-50).
Very, very heavy precipitation is forecast on Monday as a strong and powerful cold front slams into Mt. Hood. The snow level crashes from 5000′ early to 1500′-2000′ midday and 1500′ overnight. About 2.0” WE is forecast during the day for 16-22” new snow. Bring a shovel or you will not be getting out of the parking lots. Another 0.7” WE is forecast overnight as 8-10” powder. Wind: SW 40-80 early, SW 25-50 during the day, WSW 15-20 in the afternoon, and SW 20-40 overnight.
Models then keep moderate snowfall coming Tuesday through Wednesday morning. A short break Wednesday afternoon leads into some sort of atmospheric river event on Thursday. Details are far from clear, but this could be the, um, consolidation event we’ve been looking for. Enjoy the powder madness on the mountain today!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling
FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!
