Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
If you like storm skiing, today will be a good day for you. You’ll also have some great opportunities early next week. If skate skiing is your thing, you’ve got the next few days. Let’s look deeper and see what we’ve got.
Thursday’s definitely going to be a stormy one as a low pressure system plows right over Mt. Hood. 40 Knot winds are forecast at 850mb, and 60 knot winds are predicted at 700mb. In other words… very storm. The snow level near Mt. Hood will be sea level this morning and 1000′ this afternoon (although 850mb temps will rise to -4C, which gives us a snow quality level of 2000′). Overnight, the snow level drops back to 0′ near Mt. Hood with 850mb temps at -8C. Daytime snow prediction is 0.8” water equivalent (WE) with strong NW flow enhancing orographic effects. Let’s call that 10-13” after 7am. Overnight, another 0.3” is forecast with lesser wind. 4-5” dry powder seems like a good guess. Wind: Building to W 60 mid-morning, turning to NW 45-50 this afternoon, WNW 30-40 this evening and NW 25-30 overnight. Free refills!
Friday starts out with orographic snow flurries and then turns clear. High clouds move in overnight. The snow level near Mt. Hood will be 0′ with a free air freezing level at 0′ for the rest of the day. Total accumulation: 0.1” to 0.2” WE in the morning, for an inch or two of dry snow. Wind: NW 25-30 early, E 5 in the afternoon, and NW 5-15 overnight.
Saturday looks cloudy early and the clear by mid-morning. The free air freezing level will be 0′ most of the day but may rise to 5500-6000′ overnight as 850mb temps hit +1C. No precip. Wind: NW 5-15 early, W 10-15 during the day, SW 15-25 overnight. Sunday starts warmer, but temps quickly drop. Snow is forecast to start up sometime Sunday night into Monday, when a stronger system is forecast. Deets aren’t yet clear, but it looks like the snow level will start in the 4500′ zone and fall to the 1500-2000′ zone by Monday afternoon. Models are enthusiastic about the amount of snowfall next week. Fingers crossed!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling
FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!
