Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Dry weather on Wednesday gives way to another snowstorm on Thursday and another round of dry weather on Friday. The next big system to hit Mt. Hood arrives sometime late Sunday or early Monday.

For Wednesday, a few flurries pre-dawn give way to clear sky during the day, high clouds in the evening, and scattered light flurries overnight. The snow level will be sea level near Mt. Hood all day. Just a trace of snow will fall. Wind will be E 10 in the morning, W 20 in the afternoon, WNW 30-35 in the evening (when a few unexpected flurries could pop up) and W 35 overnight.

Thursday starts cloudy. Heavy snowfall moves in by dawn and keeps falling all day. Free refills of powder in storm skiing conditions is your daytime forecast. Snow tapers off in the evening, but a bonus dose of snow could come from orographic assistance. The snow level near Mt. Hood will be 0′ most of the day rising to 500-1000′ in the afternoon and quickly falling back to 0′ overnight. Models are all over the place on snowfall for Thursday; they predict 0.8” to 1.8” water equivalent. Given the orographic assistance of the NW wind, let’s call it 10-13” during the day and 1-3” overnight. Wind: W 35-40 early, NW 30-40 in the afternoon, and NW 20-25 overnight.

Friday will be sunny all day with high clouds overnight. The snow level will be 0′ for the 24 hour period. No precip. Wind: NW 20 most of the day, NW 10-15 in the evening, and W 20 after midnight. Intermittent light snowfall is predicted on Saturday. Sunday starts clear but quickly turns cloudy with snow moving in sometime in the afternoon, evening, or overnight hours; models are not sure yet. They do indicate a period of heavy snow at some point in the time period. Longer term: lots of snow. Thank you La Nina. Have a great day!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling

FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!
