Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Light snowfall today gives way to a mostly sunny Wednesday and then a snowy Thursday. Sunshine returns on Friday. The next storm system is slated for Sunday into Monday. Right now on the slopes: perfect packed powder conditions. It’s not even that cold. Go get it!
Tuesday’s mountain weather starts with light snowfall. That tapers off and eventually leaves the mountain high overcast. The snow level will be sea level today, and less than an inch of new is forecast. Wind: W 10 all day becoming E 10-15 overnight.
Wednesday starts mostly cloudy but turns clear by midday. Temps will be in the single digits – this will be the coldest day of the week. An easterly orographic snow shower isn’t out of the question. If it happens, there will be just a trace of snow. The snow level will be sea level all day long. Wind: E 15-20 in the morning, E 10-15 in the afternoon, and NW 20-25 overnight.
Thursday starts cloudy, but snow quickly moves in. It’s a bit unclear how much snow we’ll get – models are calling for 0.5” to 1.0” WE plus a strong orographic component. The snow level near Mt. Hood will be sea level most of the day. There will be a short rise to 500-1000′ near Mt. Hood in the evening before the snow level drops back to sea level there. 850Mb temps will be -8C in the morning, -4C in the afternoon (2000′ equivalent snow quality), and -9C overnight. About 0.3-0.5” WE is forecast before sunset, for 3-5” snow. Another 0.4-0.6” WE is expected overnight, for 5-7”. 50% more is entirely possible given the orographic effects. Wind will be NW 25 in the morning, WSW 45-50 midday, WNW 40-50+ in the afternoon, and NW 30 overnight. High wind could affect lift operations from midday on.
Friday looks sunny all day. The snow level near Mt. Hood will be at the surface. Wind will be NW 30 in the morning, E 5 in the afternoon, and NW 15 after midnight. We’re probably looking at dry weather on Saturday followed by snow Sunday night into Monday. Have fun!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling
FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!
