Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Actual snowfall over the last few days blew the forecast out of the water, so to speak, as orographic assistance really aided Mt. Hood in pulling every last bit of moisture out of the incoming air. About 15” of snow fell in the last 24 hours, giving Mt. Hood approximately 12 or 13 feet of snow in the last couple of weeks. Wondering about the next couple of weeks? About 5-8” water equivalent is forecast. If that’s all snow, we’re looking at another five to eight feet. Thanks, La Nina!

Snow tapers off on Monday morning and returns in very light form on Monday night. Just a trace to an inch is forecast this morning before we see a few sun breaks and then high overcast sky from the next weather system. Up to an inch is forecast tonight after 4pm. The snow level will be sea level all day. Wind: W 20 most of the day decreasing to W 15 this evening and W 5-10 overnight.

Tuesday starts with a very light snow flurry and quickly turns clear. The snow level will, once again, be sea level. Temps on the slopes will be 5-10F, perhaps less in the morning. Wind: light and variable. Wednesday looks clear and cold all day with the snow level at sea level and mountain temps in the 0-5 range. Wind will be E 5-10 early, E 15 in the afternoon, variable to 10 in the evening, and NW 15-20 overnight. The next system moves in on Thursday afternoon and sticks around until Friday morning. The path and associated moisture are not yet clear, but the wind direction is: NW. This means orographics will come into play and up the snowfall totals from whatever the models are predicting. Fingers crossed. In the meantime, you’ll have the best packed powder groom ever seen. Go get some.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s an interesting mix this morning as cold air tries to enter the Gorge from both sides. The eastern WA cold pool is winning. Easterlies as I wrote this were 25-30 at Stevenson, 15-20 at Hood River, and 20ish at Arlington. Rooster, on the other hand, was westerly 5-10! The wind turns calm in the afternoon and then may turn to light westerlies for a few hours near Cascade Locks, and only Cascade Locks, this afternoon. Don’t try it. Temps will be in the low-mid 20’s all day. River flow is 164kcfs and river temp is 42F. Tuesday starts with E 20-25 at Rooster and Stevenson and picks up to 30-35 in the afternoon. High temp: 29F. Wednesday brings easterlies at 40-50mph all day at Rooster and 40ish at Stevenson. High temp: 26F.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Light snow this morning gives way to clouds and then very light snowfall tonight. Temps will be in the low-mid 20’s all day. Easterlies this morning. Calm wind midday. Light westerlies (?) this afternoon. Tuesday will have a few flurries in the morning followed by a Nothing cloud and then partly cloudy sky. Temps will be in the low 20’s in the morning and mid 20’s later. Easterlies. No rainbows. Wednesday will be partly cloudy in the morning, clear midday, and high overcast in the evening. No snowfall. Easterlies. No rainbows.

Cycling

FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. There’s a night-lit shop mountain bike ride at Syncline on Tuesday evenings at 5:45pm.
