Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Christmas day will be a fine powder day on the mountain. If you’re looking for XC skiing, you’ll probably want Classic gear unless you’re in for the giant workout. The mountain will pick up another foot or so of fresh powder by tomorrow, and then we move into a period of lighter snowfall or maybe even some sunshine. Next system: Thursday.
Sunday has a ton of decent quality powder on the ground. I was assured that it is not Champagne powder, but that it is quite good. Enjoy! The snow level today will be 500-1000′ in the morning and will fall to 0′ in the afternoon. About 0.4” WE is forecast today, for 4-6” powder. Another 0.4” WE is forecast tonight, for a shot at 5-7” of the elusive Champagne powder. Wind: WSW 25-35 this morning, W 15 this afternoon, and SW 5-15 overnight.
Sunday starts snowy and turns partly cloudy with flurries. The sky clears overnight. Snow level = sea level. Temps will start in the teens and drop to the single digits. Bundle up! About 0.2” WE is forecast during the day, for 2-3” dry powder. Another 0.1” is forecast in the evening before the stars come out. That’s one more inch of fluffy snow for you. Wind: SW 10-15 in the morning, W 20 in the afternoon, and variable to 10mph overnight.
Monday will be sunny until sunset. High clouds move in, and a wee bit of snow may fall overnight. The snow level will be sea level all day and all night as 850mb temp fall to -16C. Expect single digit temps on the mountain. Snow quality: perfect packed powder. Wax cold. Wind: variable to 10 all day, WNW 25-30 overnight fading to W 10-15 by Tuesday morning.
It does look like the sun will come back out on Tuesday and Wednesday. The next weather system is planned for Thursday into Friday, but the details are far from clear. Merry Christmas!
Gorge Wind Forecast
Saturday brings light westerlies at 7-10mph everywhere along the river to start the day. The wind turns calm by afternoon. River flow is 93,300 cfs, river temp is 43F, and high temp forecast is 38F. Sunday brings westerlies at 10-13 west of Underwood and east of The Dalles. That holds for most of the day, and then the wind turns easterly overnight. High temp: 33F. Monday starts with E 10-15 in the western Gorge, turns calm, and then turns around to W 10-15 at Cascade Locks for a few hours. Easterlies build overnight and should be 40-50mph near Rooster on Tuesday morning.

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.
Hood River Weather Forecast
Mostly cloudy sky this morning turns cloudy and snowy later today. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid-upper 30’s later. Total snow 1-3”. Wind: light westerly becoming calm. Snow flurries continue on Sunday. 1-2” during the day. Then dry. Temps will be in the mid 20’s early and low 30’s later. Light and variable wind turns light easterly overnight. No rainbows. Monday will be dry and partly cloudy. Light snowfall moves in overnight. Temps will be in the mid teens in the morning and upper 20’s later. Light and variable wind. No rainbows.

Cycling
FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. There’s a night-lit shop mountain bike ride at Syncline on Tuesday evenings at 5:45pm.
