Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mt. Hood is set with a deep, solid snowpack as we head into another few days of moderate snowfall followed by a period of (likely) dry and (almost certainly) very cold weather.

Tuesday starts out clear on the mountain. Clouds move in this evening along with some light snowfall. The daytime free air freezing level will be 5000′ in the morning and 6500′ in the afternoon. Tonight’s system drops the snow level to 4000′ and keep is there. We’ll see about 0.2” water equivalent (WE) starting around 7pm. That’ll be a couple inches of standard-variety snow. Wind: variable to 10 this morning, WSW 10-15 this afternoon building to SW 25-45 overnight.

Wednesday sees intermittent snowfall with sun breaks during the day. Steadier snow moves in overnight as does colder air. The snow level will be 4000′ all day long. It drops to 1500′ with the passage of the overnight cold front. During the day, 0.1 to 0.2” WE falls as 1-2” snow. Another 0.5” WE is forecast overnight for 4-6” powder. Wind: SW 25-45 most of the day turning to W 30 after midnight.

Orographic (terrain-enhanced) snowfall continues on Thursday as another weather system sweeps through. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning and 500-1000′ from the afternoon on. Daytime snowfall will be 0.4-0.6” WE, depending on how much orographic enhancement we get. That’s 4-7” fluffy powder. Overnight, another 0.3” falls, for 3-4” of pow-pow. Wind: W 30 in the morning, W 35 in the afternoon, WSW 25-30 in the evening, and SW 20-45 after midnight.

Another round of moderate to heavy snowfall is forecast on Friday with the snow level around 1500’UP to a foot of snow is possible. The weather then turns quite cold Saturday into Sunday with the possibility of widespread, all-elevation, light snowfall. We then turn our attention to very, very, very cold weather for at least part of next week. Our snowpack shall stay lovely, as will the groom. Smile and enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Easterlies start out Tuesday at 40-45 at Rooster 20-25 at Stevenson, and 15-20 at Viento. Rooster slowly fades to 20-25 this afternoon and goes calm tonight. Cycling

FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. There’s a night-lit shop mountain bike ride at Syncline on Tuesday evenings at 5:45pm.
