Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Snow last night turned to drizzle prior to sunrise, and the snow won’t return until this evening. We’re then into a period of very heavy precipitation, mostly snow, over the next couple of days. After that: much less snow accumulation but much colder temps.

Saturday starts with drizzle. That’ll switch to snow between 4pm and 7pm. The snow level will be 6000′ through sunset, but it will crash quickly to 1500′ this evening and then 500-1000′ or less overnight. About 0.15” rain is expected today. Another 0.4” water equivalent (WE) mixed precip falls between 4pm and 7pm, and then the mountain picks up 0.6” WE as dense snow tonight: 4-5”. Wind: WSW 30-40 this morning, SW 30-60 this afternoon, W 35 in the evening, and W 10 after midnight.

Sunday brings a cool atmospheric river. 850mb temps will mostly stay cold enough for snow, but a period of mixed precip or rain isn’t out of the question overnight as temps bounce around between 0C and +1C. Approximately 1.4” WE is forecast during the day. Call that 11-13” dense snow. Another 1.0” WE is forecast overnight for 8-9” additional dense snow with periods of wintry mix precip possible. Wind: W 10 in the morning, SW 10-20 in the afternoon, and SW 15-30 overnight.

Heavy snowfall continues Monday morning and finally tapers off Monday night. Once again, 850mb temps will be bouncing around in the 0C to +1C range as an offshore low pushes a tongue of warm air northward. The farther south this thing stays, the more likely it is that the precip will stay snow. As of this morning, we’re looking at 1.0” WE Monday daytime, for 6-9” wet snow. Another 0.2” WE is forecast overnight, for an inch or two more. Wind: SW 15-20 all day and SSW 5-10 overnight. Just a trace of snow is forecast on Tuesday with slightly cooler temps. Rest of the week: cooler with a very solid base of snow for you to shred. Enjoy.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Drizzle today gives way to rain tonight. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and near 50 later. Light easterlies early. Calm wind or light westerlies later. 2% chance of rainbows. Sunday starts with rain or a rain/snow mix. Rain continues all day and probably switches to snow or ice or both. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and mid 30’s later. Wind will be calm in the morning and easterlies in the afternoon. No rainbows. Monday likely starts with snow or ice and may switch to rain at river level but will probably stay snow up above 500′. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and mid 30’s later. Easterlies. No rainbows.

Cycling

FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. There’s a night-lit shop mountain bike ride at Syncline on Tuesday evenings at 5:45pm.
