Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Drizzle continues on the mountain at least this morning and perhaps through the day thanks to orographic assistance from strong westerly flow. Clear sky tonight gives way to a powerful cold front on Monday – significant rain is followed by several inches of snow. Tuesday and Wednesday look mostly dry, but we could pick up some significant snow following a bit of rain on Thursday. Deets follow.
Looking at Sunday, the snow level is around 13,000′. You could have guessed that by the windows-open weather at sea level this morning. Temps drop just a little on the mountain today; the snow level falls to 11,000′ overnight. While the sounding model calls for clear sky, strong wind will likely drive daytime drizzle. Expect 0.05” to 0.2” rain by evening. Wind: W 45-50 this morning, W 40 this afternoon, and WSW 35-45 overnight.
Clear sky (maybe) on Monday morning turns drizzly around 10am, torrentially rainy for a few hours, then snowy. The snow level will be 11,000′ early. It will fall to 6500′ in the afternoon, 2500′ after sunset, and as low as 1000-1500′ overnight. About 1.0” rain is forecast between 1pm and 4pm. Whoa! Another 0.5” water equivalent (WE) falls as rain-then-snow overnight. That’s probably going to be half rain and half snow at 5000′. Call it 2-3” new with a chance for doubling due to orographic effects. Wind will be WSW 35-45 in the morning, SW 30-60 in the afternoon, WNW 45-55 in the evening, and NW 30-40 after midnight.
Light snowfall continues with that orographic assistance on Tuesday morning. By the afternoon, the sky will clear. The snow level will be 1500′ early and 2000′ later falling to 1000-1500′ overnight under clear sky. Just a trace to 0.1” WE is forecast for up to an inch of new snow. Wind: NW 30-40 early, SW 10-15 in the afternoon, and SE 20 overnight.
Wednesday looks clear and windy (SE). Warmer air moves in Thursday morning as another weather system arrives. Models don’t yet agree on the snowfall total (it’ll start as rain, BTW), but the operational GFS gives us a foot of new. Let’s vote for that one for now, even though it’s probably irrationally exuberant. Have a great day!
Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s a tricky forecast today as morning gradients sit at .06 and .06 with westerlies on the river and models really not picking this up well. Given the drizzle this morning and the cold front to the north, let’s keep Viento at gusty 20-30 all day with Stevenson at gusty 15-25. Hood River, inexplicably, was in the 13-19 range pre-dawn. Let’s keep it there with nothing between there and The Dalles and gusty 10-16 in the eastern Gorge later today. If you’re getting in the river, be careful. There’s going to be a ton of debris. River flow is 152kcfs, river temp is 52F, and high temp forecast is a balmy 64F. A strong cold front swings through on Monday late morning and drives the wind speeds up. The day starts with gusty 15-30 west of Swell. The wind will build to gusty 30-40 with giant gusts after 1pm or so all the way from Multnomah Falls to Hermiston. If you want to fully escape any raindrops, you’ll probably have to head east of Rufus. Again, be on the lookout for debris in the river. High temp: 59F. Tuesday starts with light westerlies in the west and 11-14 east of The Dalles. Afternoon wind picks up to 22-25 east of The Dalles and 10ish in the west. High temp: 49F. Easterlies return on Wednesday.
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Cycling
Significant rain in the last week means most trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!
