Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

The last chance for snowfall amidst all the incoming precipitation is today. Temps don’t return to the snow zone until early next week. Between then and now, over five inches of rain will fall on Mt. Hood with the snow level in the neighborhood of 10,000. I’m sure NWAC will be issuing an avalanche warning, and the ski areas will be sadly watching all their pretty snow melt away. In the meantime…

Rain transitions to snow on Tuesday morning as a cold front swings through. There will be a transitional period early, light snow, partly cloudy sky, and then another round of light snow overnight. The snow level starts at 8000′ and falls to 3000′. About 0.1-0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast before midday when the sun comes out. Call it 1-2” snow. Another 0.1-0.2” WE is forecast overnight for another 1-2” new. Wind will be SW 30-65 early, W 45 mid-morning, WSW 35-45 in the afternoon, and will fade to W 25 after midnight. Orographic effects could pull a little more snowfall out of lingering moisture, but not enough to classify it as “dumping”.

Wednesday starts partly cloudy. Clouds increase during the day as a warm front nears. The heavens open up a couple hours after sunset and stay open. The snow level will be 3000′ in the morning and 5000′ when the precip hits. After that, the snow level jumps to 10,000′ and stays there. About 2.0” to 2.4” rain (starting as a few inches of snow, maybe) is forecast overnight. Wind will be W 25 early and S 5-15 during the day. The wind builds to SW 20-40 in the evening and turns to WSW 30-40 after midnight.

Heavy rain continues Thursday. The snow level will be 10,000′ all day. About 2.5” rain is forecast during the day. That’s followed by a several-hour break in the evening and another 0.5” rain overnight. Wind: WSW 30-40 all day. The rain keeps coming on Friday and perhaps into Saturday. Models hint at colder weather moving in sometime between Monday and Tuesday in the form of an Alaska cold front. Pick a different sport than skiing for the rest of this week – perhaps whitewater kayaking or running in the rain?

Gorge Wind Forecast

A cold front swinging through will drive westerlies today. Drive preemptively and get on it, because the wind will fade. That’s about it for the next few days unless you plan to take advantage of rainy easterlies. Tuesday starts utterly and completely light and variable. The wind quickly turns to gusty westerlies at 24-27 west of Hood River (Viento will likely read in the low 30’s) and east of The Dalles. The wind near Hood River will eventually catch up for a bit. After noon, the wind fades to gusty 15-18, then 7-10 in the west. A brief period (2 hours or so) of 25-29 is forecast east of The Dalles before the wind drops to 10-13 in the afternoon. River flow is 152kcfs, river temp is 54F, and high temp forecast is 50F.

Wednesday starts with W 5-10 and turns to E 10-15 near Rooster and Cascade Locks. Easterlies build to 30-35 overnight. Thursday starts with E 30-35 and heavy rain at Rooster with 20-25 and heavy rain at Cascade Locks. Afternoon wind fades to E 10-15. That’s it for today. Stay dry!

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Rain this morning turns partly cloudy this afternoon and rainy overnight. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and near 50 later. Moderate to strong westerlies in the morning. Light westerlies later. 99% chance of rainbows. Wednesday will be drizzly through mid morning and then mostly cloudy. Moderate rain moves in after sunset. Temps will be near 40 early and near 50 later. Light and variable wind. 64% chance of rainbows. Thursday will be very rainy for most of the day with sprinkles in the afternoon and a dry period in the evening. After that: heavy rain. Temps will be near 40 early and in the low 50’s later. Light wind. No rainbows.

Cycling

Significant rain in the last week means most trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. Also note: it’s been snowing above 2000′, so higher elevation trails may have significant snowfall. Be prepared if you’re heading up high.
