Gorge Wind Forecast

Long-lasting westerlies are what’s happening for the next few days. Today and tomorrow are likely to be two of the strongest days this season as temps drop 10F on the west side and stay hot in the desert. These strong westerlies stick around through Friday before dropping to the “moderate” zone for the weekend.

Looking at Wednesday, we start with impressive gradients of 0.18 (wow) and 0.06. Dawn Patrol kicked off with 23-27 between Viento and Hood River with 13-16 east of there and 10-13 at Stevenson. Bring your smallest gear today; by late morning, the wind jumps to 29-33 between Viento and Mosier with 25-28 at Stevenson, 18-22 near Rowena, and 7-11 east of there. Models have really been overplaying the wind at Doug’s recently. Perhaps today will be the day – they’re suggesting Doug’s will join at 29-33 this afternoon with Rufus at 24-27 and Arlington not really participating with wind speeds in the low teens at best. River flow is 152kcfs at The Dalles, river temp is 70F, and high temp forecast is 83F for Hood River. Arlington: 96F.

A deeper marine layer on Thursday combines with an approaching disturbance for another round of very strong wind. That disturbance could wreak a bit of havoc in the western Gorge in the afternoon; be prepared to drive east just in case. The curtain opens at dawn with 24-27 between Viento and Mosier with 8-11 near Stevenson and 12-15 east of Mosier to Arlington. By late morning, it’s 29-33, once again, between Viento and Mosier with building wind at Stevenson (probably still cloudy), 18-22 near Rowena, and 11-14 in the eastern Gorge. Models are hinting at a falling off in the evening west of Mosier – they suggest 17-21 from Stevenson to Bingen late in the day. Mosier to Rufus holds at 29-33, and Arlington joins at 23-26. High temp for Hood River: 80F. Arlington: 88F.

The current forecast for Friday is a low 20’s start between Viento and Mosier. Expect a slow and steady build to 25-28 from Hood River to Rufus midday with 27-31 from Mosier to Arlington (24-27 at Threemile, 17-20 western Gorge) in the evening. Troutdale, and perhaps even Cascade Locks, remain cloudy or partly cloudy almost all day. High temp: 78F. The weekend forecast is currently 19-22 on Saturday and 22-25 on Sunday. Subject to change, of course, but warmer temps and less marine influence in the west suggest lighter wind.

Coast, Jones, Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind direction north unless otherwise noted. Swell forecast from NWS.) Wednesday: NW 5-10/N 5-10/N 30-35+, NW swell 4-5 feet at 8 seconds. Thursday: NW 10/NNW 10/N 30-35, NW 4′ @ 8. Friday: LTW/LTW/N25-35, W 3′ @ 9. Jones Wednesday: 22-25. Thursday: 17-20. Friday: calm. Sauvie’s Wednesday: 10-13. Thursday: 13-16. Friday: 8-11.

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Underhill. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed” due to wildfire last year.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
