Gorge Wind Forecast

“Persistence” is the key word for today’s forecast. Offshore high pressure combines with inland low pressure and a day-starting marine layer in Portland for a carbon copy of yesterday’s wind. Add in a bit more marine layer on Wednesday for a bit more wind, and same on Thursday for a shift to the east. Same on Friday. Models suggest a dip back to the teens for Saturday followed by a resurgence for Sunday. It’s going to be a mighty fine week to be a windsports enthusiast!

So, Tuesday’s starting off with marine clouds in the metro area and gradients of 0.15 (pdx-dls) and 0.07 (dls-psc). That’s close to what we had yesterday in the west and a lot more than yesterday out east. Before you make your choices, keep in mind that a wildfire is burning above and east of Lyle. Smoke could impact areas east of there. Morning westerlies will be 24-27 from Viento to Mosier, just perfect for your Dawn Patrol Downwinder. East of there, the day starts with up-and-down 11-17. Same for Stevenson. By late morning, the wind fills in at 25-28 from Viento to Doug’s with 23-26 at Stevenson. With that added gradient support, Rufus will join at 25-28 early afternoon. If you’re farther east than that, you’ll find 22-25 at Arlington this evening. Westerlies stick it out for the executive session (later than 4pm) everywhere but Stevenson, which will dip in the evening. River flow is 144kcfs, river temp is 70F, and high temp forecast is 89F.

A weak weather impulse Tuesday night into Wednesday morning drags a deeper marine layer into the western half of the state. Our impacts include 5F less heat and 5mph more wind. The day starts with 26-29 from Viento to Mosier with 13-16ish everywhere else. Given the depth of the marine layer, it’s possible Rufus could be in on the Dawn Patrol mix. By early afternoon, the wind builds to 29-32 from Viento to Rufus with 23-26 at Arlington. Thanks to the deep marine layer, Stevenson will be slow to build, but it too will eventually see 26-29. Worried about missing it? I sure am, because I have to work all day. Take heart: the executive session will be there for you – the wind is forecast to last all the way through the evening. High temp Hood River: 83F. Biggs: 92F.

Repeat all of that for Thursday. Dawn Patrol at 26-39 from Viento to Doug’s. Late morning wind at 31-34 from Viento to Arlington. Stevenson: cloudy until early afternoon, but eventually 26-29. Threemile: 26-29. Duration of wind: all the way through the executive session. High temp Hood River: 76F. Arlington: 87F.

Friday: 27-31. Saturday: 21-24. Sunday: 25-28. Hopefully that’s enough wind to make you happy! It’s definitely enough to make me happy. Enjoy this beautiful week on the river. And please, please, be very careful with cigarettes, joints, stoves, trailer chains, and anything else that could cause sparks. Fire danger is extreme and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

Coast, Jones, Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind direction north unless otherwise noted. Swell forecast from NWS.)
