Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s looking good for westerlies all the way through this upcoming week and into the weekend. Today’s no exception. In a surprising now-cast twist, gradients this morning are up a couple notches from yesterday morning and so is the wind. The day starts with 0.15 (pdx-dls) and 0.04 (dls-psc). That’s enough for 22-26 from Viento to Mosier with 14-17 east and west of that stretch. Despite lack of evidence in the models, a quick jump to 25-28 between Viento and Moiser isn’t out of the question (but it’s also far from guaranteed) for a couple hours this morning. Portland’s heating (high temp 85 there) knocks the wind down to 18-22 from Viento to Mosier early afternoon. At that time, you’ll also find 12-15 near Rowena and 10-13 to the east. Evening westerlies bounce back at 21-24 all the way from Stevenson to Rufus with 10-13 at Arlington. River flow is 112kcfs (perfect for downwinding!), river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 88F for Hood River.

Temps cool off tonight as the marine layer returns to metro area. Monday’s Dawn Patrol starts at 19-22 from Viento to Hood River with 8-11 everywhere else. 21-24 is the call between Viento and Mosier in the morning with Stevenson slowly building as the clouds burn off in the west. Once those clouds are gone, the wind is likely to dip to 14-17 between Stevenson and Hood River. Don’t despair: you’ll then find 21-24 between Mosier and The Dalles late afternoon. Rufus takes a slower approach. It holds at 18-22 through early afternoon with 8-11 at Arlington. Models seem to like the idea of a late resurgence; keep an eye out for 22-25 between Moiser (maybe) or Lyle (perhaps) and Rufus late in the day. High temp: 88F.

Slightly stronger offshore high pressure and slightly weaker inland low pressure combine on Tuesday for a counter-intuitively stronger wind day despite 3F degrees more heat. Models suggest Dawn Patrol at 22-26 near Hood River. That holds through the morning, dips early afternoon, and returns at 24-28 in the evening east of Mosier.

Deeper marine clouds are the story Wednesday through Friday along with high temps near 80 rather than 90. This sets us up for three strong west wind days. As of right now, models say Thursday will be the strongest of the bunch (30-35) followed by Wednesday (gusty 27-31) and Friday (24-27). This, of course could change. Exact details aside, it’s looking like a fabulous week on the river. Enjoy!

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Underhill. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed” due to wildfire last year.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
