Gorge Wind Forecast

The only day in the near future with lagging westerlies is today; other than that, we’re looking at low 20’s or better through next week, assuming nothing changes. That’s good news!

For Friday, we see high pressure building into the eastern half of the region and lackluster high pressure offshore. A weak marine push into areas of the Willy Valley last night will burn off quickly today. Early gradients were .09 and .03, just enough for 17-20 from Viento to Swell with 10mph or less everywhere else. Midday wind drops in response to heating in the metro area and increasing pressure readings out east; 10-13 from Stevenson to Swell is as good as it gets midday. Everywhere else will be less than 5mph with light/variable wind out east. Late evening sees the wind pick up to 13-16 or so between Stevenson and Hood River. River flow is way down: 119kcfs at The Dalles. River temp is 69F (sure feels warmer in the water!), and high temp forecast is 92F.

A deeper marine push on Saturday results in stronger westerlies. Dawn Patrol looks like 22-25 between Stevenson and Moiser with 11-14 east and west of there all the way to Arlington. The wind quickly builds to 24-28 between Stevenson and The Dalles with 13-16 at Rufus and 5-10 to the east. Models like the idea of the wind holding all day and eventually filling in to Arlington; the mid-afternoon call is 26-29 from Stevenson to Arlington with a shot at 28-31 between Rowena and Rufus. High temp: 90F.

Sunday’s wind starts at 20-23 from Viento to Mosier, dips to 15-18 midday, and returns at 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles in the evening. Models are suggesting 21-24 Monday followed by three days or more of 27-31. Enjoy!

Coast, Jones, Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind direction north unless otherwise noted. Swell forecast from NWS.) Friday: 15-20/20-25/25-30, SW 3′ @ 17. Saturday: NW 10-15/N20-25/30-40, SW 3′ @ 15. Sunday: 20-25/25-30/35-40, SW 5′ @ 14. Jones Friday: 21-24. Saturday: 24-27. Sunday: 19-22. Sauvie’s Friday: 15-18. Saturday: 14-17. Sunday: 17-20.

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Underhill. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed” due to wildfire last year.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
