Gorge Wind Forecast

Limited marine clouds this morning and high pressure pushing in from the southeast lead to a lighter day on the river. The opposite happens tomorrow; a deep marine layer combines with heat in the desert for a strong westerly day. This setup, minus a bit of cloud depth, continues on Thursday for another solid day on the river. As of this morning, it appears the westerlies will continue through the weekend.

Today’s biggest story is heat all across the land; this leads to diminished wind strength and quality for most of the day. You’ll have to wait for evening for a bit of a surge. The day starts with gradients of .08 and .03 and westerlies at 7-11 most places. Viento, as always, is the exception with a 20-23mph start. Late morning wind climbs to gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier with 7-10 to Doug’s and light wind to the east. That’s pretty much the setup until evening. An approaching trough starts to impact the wind mid-evening, if we’re lucky; that’ll take the wind to 21-26 from Mosier to Celilo, perhaps to Rufus. During that time, the western gorge drops to 12-15 and the far east picks up to 10-13. River flow is way down today: 125kcfs at The Dalles. River temp is 68F. High temp forecast is 95F.

A trough settles in on the western half of the region on Wednesday morning. Marine clouds pour into the area, probably not to Hood River, but definitely to Cascade Locks. They’ll hang out until early afternoon. Dawn Patrol westerlies will be plenty strong for you to sneak in a session before work: expect 25-29 from Viento to Arlington right off the bat. By late morning, speeds climb to 28-32 from Viento to Arlington. It does appear the western Gorge will drop to 20-25 in the afternoon, but you’ll still have 28-32 from Mosier eastward until evening. High temp: 79F for Hood River.

Slightly less marine clouds will be present on Thursday morning, but the wind will still be here for you. Expect Dawn Patrol at 21-24 from Viento to Mosier with 7-10 everywhere else. Midday westerlies climb to 25-28 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 13-16+ (and rising fast) at Rufus with 7-10 out east. Late afternoon wind fills in to Arlington in the mid to upper 20’s.

Friday looks somewhat lighter with wind in the mid teens. The weekend forecast is current for mid 20’s on Saturday and mid to upper 20’s on Sunday. Looks like a great week on the river. Enjoy!

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. From the 44trails.org website… Open trails: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks (to 1.5 miles above the 4410 road), 450 to the junction with 15 mile, Underhill. Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. Respect the closure. Surveyor’s Ridge: clear of snow and trees. Other 44 Road Trails: clearing in progress.
