Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies continue through the extended forecast period, just like they’re supposed to do in July! Today will be a carbon-copy repeat of yesterday. The wind backs off a bit on Tuesday in response to widespread heating, and then roars back on Wednesday and Thursday as high temps drop about 15 degrees.

Looking at Monday, we have a stable setup, mostly cloudy sky in Portland, and gradients of .11 and .05. Dawn patrol is mostly 21-25 from Viento to Moiser with 18-22 between Swell and Hood River. To the east and west, morning wind is mostly in the 14-17 range. Viento, Swell, and Hood River will hold at gusty 20-25 through mid-afternoon, when the wind is likely to drop to 15-19. Stevenson starts at 14-17 and builds to 22-25, holding through the evening. We’ll see the stretch from Rowena to Rufus hold at 14-17 through mid-morning before climbing back to 22-26 this afternoon. Rufus over-performed yesterday, and with the same overall setup today, we can greenlight the possibility of gusty 25-30 there this afternoon. Arlington is right ton the edge; let’s call it 11-14 most of the day with 20-23 from mid-afternoon on through the evening. River flow is 148kcfs, river temp is 68F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 88F.

High pressure surges northward from the Utah region on Tuesday lowering gradients to decrease across the Cascades. Temps will also be up about 6F over Tuesday, and there won’t be much if any marine clouds in Portland. Early wind will be 14-17 from Viento to Swell with 7-10 in Hood River and light wind to the east. Afternoon westerlies will be just enough to get you out there: 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River and 17-20 from Mosier to Avery with light and variable wind in the eastern Gorge. High temp: 94F.

A deep marine layer piles into Portland on Wednesday and holds through early to mid afternoon. Hood River starts partly cloudy and then turns clear. This starts the day with 26-30 from Viento to Rufus with 20-23 at Stevenson and east of Rufus. Late morning onward: 26-29 at Stevenson and 30-33 from Viento to Arlington. High temp: a very pleasant 78F. Thursday’s forecast is 26-29. Enjoy!

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. From the 44trails.org website… Open trails: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks (to 1.5 miles above the 4410 road), 450 to the junction with 15 mile, Underhill. Upper 450: patches of snow and 10 trees down. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed”.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure. Surveyor’s Ridge: clear of snow and trees. Other 44 Road Trails: clearing in progress. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. No parking at the corral. No dogs on the trails. No exceptions. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they let us use their land, and in return, we respect their rules! New Whoopdee: open.
