Gorge Wind Forecast

A monster of a marine layer stuck around all day yesterday, and despite weaker gradients, the wind was stronger. It’s not often that your forecaster is overpowered on a 2.9, but it happened! And that is why your forecast is later than usual – lots of sleep needed! The westerlies back off a notch or two for the next few days, but they’ll remain strong enough for your preferred sport.

We start off Friday with gradients of 0.14 (pdx-dls) and 0.03 (dls-psc). That screams “Corridor”, and the morning wind confirms. The day starts with 20-23 from Viento to Swell with 13-16 at Stevenson and east to The Dalles. While the wind is in the 20’s at Maryhill this morning, it’s worth waiting to see if it holds before you drive. East of there: 16-19 and unlikely to hold. By mid-morning, westerlies build to 26-29 from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 east of there and slowly building wind in Stevenson, which should max out at 23-26. By mid afternoon, Doug’s and Rufus join at 26-29 with 13-16 at Arlington. If you wait long enough, Arlington should pick up to 18-22. It does appear the clouds will clear from Portland mid afternoon. That often causes the wind between Viento and Hood River to drop and become gusty. No promises that’ll happen today, but earlier is safer! River flow is 167kcfs, river temp is 67F, and high temp for Hood River is 83F.

Dawn Patrol on Saturday starts with an air temp around 60F and westerlies at 22-25 from Viento to Swell. You’ll find 10-13 pretty much everywhere else to start the day. By late morning, stronger westerlies return; 25-28 is the call from Stevenson to Avery with 12-15 east of there. Models suggest the stronger wind will spread east to Arlington and Rufus late in the day with 25-28 by evening. High temp for Hood River: 88F.

Models like the idea of a slightly stronger marine layer on Sunday. Heck, we all like that, because it makes for a cooler morning and a pleasant night’s sleep. Essentially, though, we’re looking at a ditto copy of Saturday. Monday’s forecast is currently 24-27. That’s a lot of days of wind in a row! Enjoy!

Coast, Jones, Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind direction north unless otherwise noted. Swell forecast from NWS.) Friday: 15-20/20-25/30-35, NW swell 7′ at 9 seconds. Saturday: 15-20/25-30/30-35, NW 7′ @ 9. Sunday: 10-15+/20-25/30-35, NW 7′ @ 9. Jones Friday: 21-24. Saturday: 21-24. Sunday: 18-22. Sauvie’s Friday: 11-14. Saturday: 12-15. Sunday: 12-15.

Cycling

SDS, BLC, HFM, DGS, Kreps Ranch, etc will be closing their timberlands to Public Recreation Access starting Saturday, July 3rd at 0001 AM. This closure comes early in the season and means Hospital Hill and Whoopdee are closed to public recreation. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Trail guesses: Whoopdee, dry; Post, dry; 44 Road, dry. Falls Creek: good. From the 44trails.org website… Open trails: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks (to 1.5 miles above the 4410 road), 450 to the junction with 15 mile, Underhill. Upper 450: patches of snow and 10 trees down.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure. Surveyor’s Ridge: clear of snow and trees. Other 44 Road Trails: clearing in progress. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. No parking at the corral. No dogs on the trails. No exceptions. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they let us use their land, and in return, we respect their rules! New Whoopdee: open.
