The Forecast

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies are in the forecast for today, but the strength is up in the air. No pun intended. Normally we’re relying on a desert heat low to help our westerlies. While the models suggest that will develop today, that seems unlikely given the smoke. So we’ll underplay it. The next two days bring light and variable wind, also not helpful for smoke. It appears that the next day of strong westerlies will be Thursday, when a frontal system gives the push we need to clear out some of this smoke.

For Sunday, it’ll once again be too smoky to be on the water. Expect light and variable wind early. Afternoon westerlies pick up to 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 13-16 east of there. River flow is 97,800cfs and temp is 66 degrees. High temp today: 73.

The forecast for Monday is light westerlies at 5-10mph all day long. High temp: 75?. Tuesday’s forecast: light and variable switching to light easterly. Wednesday: light and variable becoming west 9-12. Thursday: stronger westerlies in the afternoon, thank the stars!

The Port of Hood River is offering up the Event Site, Lot 1, and the Marina parking for wildfire evacuees. I’m not sure how many people are taking advantage of that, but perhaps you can take them food and n95 masks. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).
