Gorge Wind Forecast

Marine clouds are parked in the western Gorge this morning. We’re set up for a windy day. Westerlies continue on Sunday. Get them, because it’s unclear when they’ll return. Monday sees an extremely unusual widespread east wind event. More on that in a bit.

For Saturday, we have strengthening offshore high pressure, marine clouds in the west, and a heat low in the desert. Morning gradients were .14 and .09, meaning you’ll be able to go just about anywhere for your Columbia River fun today. Early wind was 21-24 from Viento to Swell with 15-19 everywhere else. Simple forecast: 26-29 from Viento to Arlington today with 23-26 at Stevenson. Decent chance of 30-33 from Rowena to Rufus. River flow is 82,500cfs, temp is 69 degrees, and high temp for today is 81.

Very strong offshore high pressure will help reality beat the models on Sunday. Morning wind starts with 12-15 from Viento to Hood River with 0-10 in other locations (happy fisherpeople). Westerlies build to 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier with 5-10 east of there. High temp: 92.

If you’re fascinated by weather, you’ll want to clear Labor Day so you can give it your full attention. The morning starts out normal as can be – offshore high, inland low. A fast-moving trough drops from Canada midday. Associated high pressure (1034mb or so) combines with a north-moving heat low offshore.

Result: widespread east wind at 20-30mph from 11am on or so all the way from Hood River to Boardman. Rooster and Stevenson join the fun late afternoon. Easterlies hold at 15-30 from Hood River eastward overnight and climb to 35-50 at Rooster. Why the big range? Because the wind will extend all the way to 9000′, which often results in lighter wind on the river. Even so, “light” will be an inappropriate adjective – the gradients will mirror the biggest of winter wind events. NWS calls it a 6 or 7 sigma event. Wow. Nuking easterlies continue on Tuesday with averages of 50+ at Rooster, 40ish at Stevenson, and 30ish at Viento. It’s worth mentioning that fire danger will be off the charts extreme during this period. Be careful!

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).

Cycling

9/5: Hood River County lands are now closed between 9pm and 5am due to extreme fire danger and the likelihood of nighttime users starting a fire. Lands are still open during the day. Moto use is limited to developed roads. Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Underwood are closed due to fire danger. Respect the closures. Other Post news: Eldorado has reopened, as have other trails associated with that particular timber harvest closure.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mt. Hood Meadows allows hiking within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here. Well done, T-Line! The Mt. Hood weather forecast will be on vacation unless something interesting happens in the weather up there. Timberline is allowing uphill access outside the permit area on the climbers’ trail only.

Have an awesome day!
