Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies beat the forecast by a few hours and a couple mph yesterday, and it wouldn’t be surprising if they did the same today! Tomorrow, though, that’s your rest day. Light wind is all we’re expecting. It’s back to westerlies for Friday and Saturday. If you like easterlies, you’re looking at Sunday. After that, models are all over the place, and it’s not worth predicting at this point! Looking at Wednesday, we have offshore high pressure and a desert heat low to contend with as the day starts. It appears the desert will have just enough of a jump on the heating to keep the wind flowing today. Most likely scenario is 17-20 for a couple hours this morning between Viento and Swell. I suspect the wind will dip midday to 13-16 thanks to city heat. Afternoon wind bounces back to the 18-22 range from Stevenson to Hood River. 13-16 from Mosier to The Dalles. Light easterlies east of there. River flow is 97,500cfs, temp is 68, and high temp today will be 90 degrees.

On to Thursday: hot weather all across the land gives us that light wind day you’ve been waiting for. Wind will be light and variable early, east 10-15 from Stevenson to Viento midday, and E 5-10 east of Hood River in the afternoon. High temp: 95.

A very interesting setup presents on Friday and Saturday. An offshore low sends cooler air and marine clouds into the western half of the state. A beast of a heat low sits in the desert. Despite the non-standard setup, westerlies continues. Morning wind will be in the “light” range. Afternoon westerlies pick up to gusty 19-23 on Friday and gusty 23-26 on Saturday.

As of right now, it looks like we’ll see easterlies Sunday. After that, it’s all guesswork. Models don’t agree at all on what’ll happen. For example, the Euro ensembles have a high temp for The Dalles on Monday of anywhere between 65 and 100. So… we’ll wait before forecasting past Sunday.

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mt. Hood Meadows allows hiking within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here. Well done, T-Line! The Mt. Hood weather forecast will be on vacation unless something interesting happens in the weather up there. Timberline is allowing uphill access outside the permit area on the climbers’ trail only.

Have an awesome day!
