Gorge Wind Forecast
Whitecaps stretch across the river from Washington to Oregon this morning. While they’re all the way out to Arlington to start the day, westerlies fall off “out there” and hold “closer to home”. After today, we’ll have at least two more days of moderate westerlies.
Looking at more detail for today, we see wind all the way to Arlington, and especially near Rufus, to start the day. It’s probably best not to be pulled too far east too late in the day; building high pressure focuses the wind on the western Gorge this afternoon. For the morning, expect a short round of 25-30 near Maryhill with 18-22 east of there. The western Gorge will also see 18-22, although I suspect Mosier has a bit more. Things settle out midday. The eastern Gorge drops to 10-13. Areas between Stevenson and The Dalles level out at 20-24. River flow is 146kcfs. Temp is 69. High temp today: 77.
A ridge of high pressure builds over the Northwest. Offshore high pressure tilts positively. Result: plus ten degrees in the temps, winds that focus on the western Gorge, and some added gustiness. Westerlies start at 18-22 from Viento to Mosier. Afternoon wind lands in the 20-24 range from Stevenson to Hood River with 12-15 from Mosier to Doug’s and 5-10 east of there. High temp: 90.
Wednesday brings another round of moderate westerlies after a light, fisherfolk-friendly start. Morning wind will be 7-10 from Viento to Hood River. Afternoon westerlies pick up to gusty 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Thursday’s forecast currently looks light westerlies and Friday looks light and variable.
Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).
