Gorge Wind Forecast

A big Saturday on the river gives way to a not-so-big Sunday on the river. Maybe that’ll give you a chance to rest, and maybe not! Westerlies stat the day at gusty 18-22 from Viento to Hood River. Best guess today, because models contradict gut instinct: 18-22 all day long from Viento to Hood River. Mosier adds on too. Just FYI, we’ll pick up some high clouds starting mid-afternoon. River flow is 99,600cfs and temp is 69 degrees. High temp: 76.

Monday sees a warm front swing through the area. We’ll have lots of clouds for much of the day, but they’ll break up in the afternoon. Morning wind will be gusty 19-23 from Stevenson to Arlington with 23-26 possible at Viento. Afternoon westerlies pick up to gusty 22-25 from Viento to Rufus. High temp: 77.

High pressure builds across the land on Tuesday. Offshore high pressure takes a tilt, leading to northerly upper flow. Gusty, moderate westerlies result. Morning wind will be 10-13 from Viento to Swell. Afternoon: 14-17 from Viento to Hood River with 10-13 or less from Mosier to Doug’s and calm wind east of there. It appears that wind strength will lessen Wednesday through Friday and perhaps switch to easterlies over the weekend. However, there’s a lot of uncertainty in that forecast, so don’t bank on it yet!

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).

Coast (north/central/south – swell forecast provided by NWS. Wind northerly except as noted). Sunday: NW10-15/15-20/30-40, NW swell 7′ @ 8 seconds. Monday: 15-20/20-25/30-40, NW 6′ @ 8. Tuesday: 20-25/20-25/S 10-15, NW 6′ @ 12. Jones Sunday: 17-20. Monday: LTW. Tuesday: light. Sauvie’s Sunday: 12-15 > 5pm. Monday: 8-11. Tuesday: 16-19.

Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and upper 70’s later. Muggy. Moderate westerlies. 1.5% chance of rainbows. Tuesday will be sunny. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and upper 80’s later. Cycling

8/27: Hood River County lands are now closed between 9pm and 5am due to extreme fire danger and the likelihood of nighttime users starting a fire. Lands are still open during the day. Moto use is limited to developed roads. Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Underwood are closed due to fire danger. Respect the closures. Other Post news: Eldorado is closed about 100 yards before the Mixed Tape intersection due to timber harvesting.

Local Events

Weekly events: there are sailboat races at the Hood River Marina every Wednesday evening. Dirty Fingers has a group mountain bike ride Thursday nights at 5:30pm. The small boat group has a friendly and distanced paddle on, I believe, Thursday nights. Cheno has an outdoor HIIT workout at Columbia High School in White Salmon at 6pm on Wednesday nights. That’s pretty much it for outdoor sports. There is a BLM rally every Tuesday evening at 5:30 at the Salmon Fountain in Hood River, and there’s a White Coats for BLM rally every Wednesday evening at 6pm at 12th and May.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mt. Hood Meadows allows hiking within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here. Well done, T-Line! The Mt. Hood weather forecast will be on vacation unless something interesting happens in the weather up there. Timberline is allowing uphill access outside the permit area on the climbers’ trail only.
