Gorge Wind Forecast

If you’re like me, you’re sore from the last few days on the river. But… no rest for you wind Johnnies! Westerlies continue for another four days, at least, and there will be plenty of variety in wind strength to keep all of you happy!

For Friday, we start with a pdx-dls gradient of .05 and less than 10mph most places. Westerlies pick up to 14-17 from Viento to Swell for a couple hours late morning, fade midday, and return at 18-22 this afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier. The Rowena stretch joins in after 4pm or so. River flow is 134kcfs and temp is 69 degrees. High temp: 88.

Saturday starts with an early three-punch combo: strengthening offshore high pressure, an overnight heat low in the desert, and a solid push of cool marine air into the western half of the state. Westerlies start at 23-27 from Viento to Hood River with 25-28 at Mosier and 12-15 east of there (and at Stevenson). We’ll see a quick build to 27-32 from Viento to Mosier. Rowena-area launches join in by late morning or early afternoon, as does the Rufus stretch. If you want Arlington, you’ll have to wait until mid-afternoon, but it will rise to 27-31 as well. Don’t be surprised if wind quality and strength drops west of Mosier in the afternoon as this weather disturbance approaches. High temp: 75.

Sunday will be lighter. Models even suggest easterlies, but I suggest you ignore them. Dawn Patrol wind will be 11-14 from Viento to Arlington. Offshore high pressure at 1028mb contributes for the rest of the day, despite heat all across the land. We’ll see the wind drop (maybe) to 10-13 midday before climbing to 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier in the afternoon with light and variable wind east of Mosier. Monday’s forecast currently looks like 22-25. Uncertainty after that means the forecast ends here, for now. Enjoy the wind!

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mt. Hood Meadows allows hiking within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here. Well done, T-Line! The Mt. Hood weather forecast will be on vacation unless something interesting happens in the weather up there. Timberline is allowing uphill access outside the permit area on the climbers’ trail only.

Have an awesome day!
