Gorge Wind Forecast

Moderate westerlies continue for the next few days. A cold front swings into the Northwest from the northwest on Saturday for one day of strong, gusty westerlies. Looking at Wednesday, we start with gradients of 0.07 and 0.02. Stay close to home! Daybreak wind was in the teens from Viento to Swell. Westerlies build to 18-22 from Viento to Mosier by late morning and climb to 21-24 for the early afternoon session from Stevenson to Mosier. The Rowena stretch joins in mid-afternoon. River flow is a measly 98,600cfs, temp is 69 degrees, and the high temp today will be in the low 80’s.

Thursday starts off with westerlies at 20-23 from Viento to Moiser. Metro area heat knocks the wind down to 16-19 for the pre-noon session. Afternoon wind picks up to 20-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles. High temp: 82. Friday starts with 14-17 and climbs to 17-20, just from Stevenson to Mosier.

Overnight Friday, a cold front approaches. It will swing through Washington and then Oregon during the day Saturday. Timing: not ideal. Result: 21-24 from Viento to Mosier to start. Short-lived 24-27 from Viento to Moiser mid-morning. Afternoon wind drops to gusty 18-25 from Stevenson to Mosier and picks up to gusty 26-30 east of Mosier, all the way to Arlington. Models suggest light easterlies on Sunday with a return to westerlies Monday afternoon. However… there’s lots of spread in the models, so there’s really no reliability in that longer-range forecast. Enjoy the windy week!

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).

Cycling

8/14: Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Underwood are closed due to fire danger. Respect the closures. Road and gravel news: Due to the Mosier Fire, there is no access to Dry Creek, Osburne Cutoff, Carroll Road, Mosier Creek Road, or other roads in the area. Given significant numbers of fire vehicles on the road, it’s best to avoid the area completely. Motorized report: as of 8/1, Post Canyon is closed to motorized use due to fire danger. Other Post news: Eldorado is closed about 100 yards before the Mixed Tape intersection due to timber harvesting. HRATS will be putting in a short hike-a-bike to Uptrack to allow for riding up to the top of Bad Motor Scooter.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mt. Hood Meadows allows hiking within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here. Well done, T-Line! The Mt. Hood weather forecast will be on vacation unless something interesting happens in the weather up there. Timberline is allowing uphill access outside the permit area on the climbers’ trail only.

Have an awesome day!
