Gorge Wind Forecast
Quite a few happy fishing boats are scattered downstream from the mouth of the White Salmon this morning. That’s a sign of two things – light wind, and biting Chinook. Yesterday’s Bonneville number: 3475. The wind picks up enough today and each day this week to replace the boats with Wind Johnnies in the afternoon.
Sunday brings light wind until late morning. Westerlies pick up to 12-15 from Viento to Swell around noon. Afternoon wind, after 2pm or so, rises to 16-19 from Stevenson to Mosier with 13-16 to The Dalles and light wind east of there. River flow is 139kcfs and temp is 69 degrees. High temp: 88.
A little extra assistance comes from a shift to W flow from NW flow on Monday. Maybe that will give Portland some extra marine clouds and allow the desert a jump start on heating. Exact details be damned. It’ll be windier. Expect 19-22 from Viento to Moiser to start the day with 10-13 near Stevenson and 10-13ish east of Mosier to Arlington. By late morning or early afternoon, westerlies climb to 22-26 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 15-18 near Rufus. High temp: 84.
On to Tuesday: deeper marine clouds in Portland combine with an approaching front in the evening for wind that’s both stronger and less reliable. Expect 15-18 to start the day from Viento to Hood River. Westerlies rise to 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus. Westerlies of some sort continue at least through Friday. High temp Tuesday: 83.
Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).
