Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies return for at least the next three days. That gives you an opportunity to jump in the river to beat the heat. Along with the wind and the heat, we have non-zero chances of thunder for Monday and Tuesday. Chances will be highest in the far eastern Gorge. Don’t worry – there will be plenty of wind closer to Hood River. Monday morning kicks off with a pretty sunrise and gradients of .05 and .03. Not much gradient equals not much wind – a couple spots are 10-13, but most locations are 5-10 to start the day. We’ll see morning wind at 11-14 from Viento to Swell post-sunrise. The wind picks up late morning through early afternoon. Max speeds will be 19-23 form Stevenson to Rufus. River flow is 130kcfs and temp is 70ish. High temp today: 96. Muggy. Tuesday sees convective clouds in the morning and unstable air, especially to the east, especially in the afternoon. This instability is elevated, and shouldn’t have too much impact on the wind unless actual thunderstorms develop. For once, you can ignore the high clouds. Don’t ignore lightning or thunderheads! Westerlies Tuesday morning start at 19-23 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 east of there. By late morning, the wind builds to 25-28 from Stevenson to Rufus with 22-26 at Arlington. Thunderstorms build east of Arlington, so perhaps it’s not the best choice. High temp Hood River: 90. Muggy. Westerlies continue on Wednesday as the ORCA high combines with a low off Canada’s west coast. Morning wind will be 20-23 form Viento to Mosier. By early afternoon, the wind builds to 23-26 from Stevenson to Avery with 19-22 near Rufus. High temp: 88. Lighter westerlies present for your inspection on Thursday. Models have consistently predicted a cold front on Friday. That would bring clouds and maybe some rain to the west wind gusty westerlies in the far eastern Gorge. Hotter weather and perhaps another round of easterlies is in the weekend forecast. Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mt. Hood Meadows allows hiking within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here. Well done, T-Line! The Mt. Hood weather forecast will be on vacation unless something interesting happens in the weather up there. Timberline is allowing uphill access outside the permit area on the climbers’ trail only.

Cycling

8/14: Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Underwood are closed due to fire danger. Respect the closures. Road and gravel news: Due to the Mosier Fire, there is no access to Dry Creek, Osburne Cutoff, Carroll Road, Mosier Creek Road, or other roads in the area. Given significant numbers of fire vehicles on the road, it’s best to avoid the area completely. Motorized report: as of 8/1, Post Canyon is closed to motorized use due to fire danger. Other Post news: Eldorado is closed about 100 yards before the Mixed Tape intersection due to timber harvesting. HRATS will be putting in a short hike-a-bike to Uptrack to allow for riding up to the top of Bad Motor Scooter.
