Gorge Wind Forecast

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, further restrictions are now in place. Remember: crowds lead to closures. First, kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Next, parking has been further reduced along the waterfront – various restrictions are in place due to crowding at Frog Beach. The Nichols boat dock remains closed due to crowding. Please try and find someplace other than the Hood River Waterfront to play.

On to the forecast – we’re looking at three days of strong westerlies followed by one day of moderate westerlies and then lighter wind when heat returns. Wednesday’s going to be a strong one. Dawn patrol wind is 18-22 from Viento to Mosier with 11-14 at other locations. Clouds burn off in the Corridor by 11am, driving the wind towards the 29-33 zone. By early afternoon, we’ll have 29-33 from Viento to Rufus. That wind will fill in all the way to Arlington this afternoon with 26-29 at Stevenson and Threemile. River flow is 245kcfs and temp is 67 degrees. High temp today: 80ish central Gorge, 90ish in the desert.

3000′ of marine layer pushes into the Gorge Wednesday night into Thursday morning. While temps are forecast to drop into the 80’s in the desert, we’ll still have a solid thermal gradient accompanying the pressure gradient. Morning wind will be 17-20 from Viento to Hood River with 10-13 at Stevenson and 23-26 from Mosier eastward.. Clouds again burn off by noon or so. When that happens, we’ll see the westerlies rise to 25-28 from Viento to Rufus. Models suggest the wind will die back at Arlington, but I suspect it may continue despite model predictions. High temp central Gorge: mid 70’s. Low 80’s out east.

Lesser marine clouds fill the western half of the region on Friday. The day starts with 17-20 from Viento to Mosier. By afternoon, we’ll have gusty 25-28 from Stevenson to Rufus. A weak weather disturbance moving towards us may decrease wind strength and reliability near Swell.

Looking longer range, we’ll have westerlies in the upper teens to low 20’s on Saturday. Models then predict hotter weather, near 100, for Sunday through Tuesday, possibly Wednesday. Models are also hinting at light easterlies Sunday and Monday. That’s not for certain yet, especially as models tend to underestimate westerlies in this particular setup. We’ll delve deeper as we get closer. In the meantime, plan for a very hot start to next week.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mt. Hood Meadows is now allowing uphill travel within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here. Well done, T-Line! The Mt. Hood weather forecast will be on vacation unless something interesting happens in the weather up there. Some of you will be tempted to go out backcountry skiing. Please don’t – accidents do happen, and you may put others at risk. Timberline is allowing uphill access outside the permit area on the climbers’ trail ONLY.

Statement on Racial Justice

Black Lives Matter. I say that with no reservations and no caveats, and I stand with Black, indigenous, and other people of color against structural racism, against mass incarceration, against police violence, against unequal treatment, against outright racism, and against any other sorts of targeted behaviors or systems. In June, I donated 10% of the income from this forecast to the National Black Justice Coalition. I encourage you to find a cause and contribute too. Don’t have financial resources? Speak up!

I pledge to speak out against racism, and I pledge to be a humble ally who is willing to look at the ways that I benefit personally from racist structures in this society. I will continue to speak up and help wake up others, and I will listen quietly when people of color need me to.

When others confront you about your racism, take a deep breath, listen quietly, and attempt to quell your natural defensiveness. We have been raised in a society founded on slavery and racism. These values (and yes, some people hold them as values) remain entrenched in our society in subtle and not-so subtle ways. I challenge you to learn to see them so that you can learn to undo them. We can’t undo the damage that’s been done, and we don’t have the right to ask for forgiveness, but we can work to create a more equitable world going forward.
