Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when you’re under a stay-at-home order? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider contributing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to support me and get the email version? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $19.99 or more gets you a year. Click below to contribute. Thank you!!

Gorge Wind Forecast
Wow. What a day that was yesterday! And that’s why your forecast is late – this forecaster’s body needed some extra rest after sailing 2.9 all afternoon. If you missed yesterday, you can have today; you’ll just have to do some driving to get it. Strong westerlies continue through tomorrow. After that, the offshore picture changes, leaving us with lighter westerlies that please a wider range of Wind Johnnies.
For Tuesday, we have offshore high pressure at 1034mb and morning gradients of .10 and .10. Whatevers on the numbers. It’s going to be very windy in the desert today. The western Gorge, Stevenson to Mosier, stays locked in clouds all day. Under those clouds, you’ll find varying westerlies that max out in the low 20’s. East of there: 26-29 from Maryhill to Boardman this morning. By afternoon, clouds burn off a bit and the wind responds with zest. Call it 32-37 from Rowena to Plymouth. Remember that Roosevelt park is still closed to day use, as is Plymouth. Today’s river flow is 336kcfs which is likely “too much” for the Rufus section of river. River temp is 61 degrees.
Clouds stick around in the western Gorge all day Wednesday, again, sending you driving for wind. Westerlies hold at gusty 16-19 in the west all day. From Avery to Boardman, you’ll find 24-27 in the morning and 28-32 in the afternoon. Will the Lyle-Doug’s stretch join the party? It’s unclear, but easy to find out. When you’re ready to get on the water, drive that way and you’ll know if you have to keep on going!
On to Thursday – our friendly and steadfast offshore high pressure shifts south at the nudging of an incoming low. We’ll still have enough force across the Cascades for westerlies, but you’ll be able to select a larger wind weapon. Westerlies start at 20-23 in the west and 23-26 east of The Dalles. It appears the wind will drop off to 17-20 everywhere in the afternoon, perhaps dropping even more than that out east. Moderate westerlies, twenties of some sort, appear to continue through the weekend.

Local Events
This is Fourth of July week, and normally there would be lots of events. Not this year. We do have the following: weekly sailboat races at the Hood River Marina on Wednesday evening. There are fireworks in The Dalles this year, but you’ll have to disperse yourself to watch them; no centralized viewing area will be available. There’s a fishing tournament at Celilo on Sunday. There’s mower racing in Wamic Saturday and Sunday. Click here for the full events calendar.Statement on Racial Justice
Black Lives Matter. I say that with no reservations and no caveats, and I stand with Black, indigenous, and other people of color against structural racism, against mass incarceration, against police violence, against unequal treatment, against outright racism, and against any other sorts of targeted behaviors or systems. It is also Pride month. Queer Black lives matter. I will be donating 10% of income from this website this month to the National Black Justice Coalition. I encourage you to do the same.
I pledge to speak out against racism, and I pledge to be a humble ally who is willing to look at the ways that I benefit personally from racist structures in this society. I will continue to speak up and help wake up others, and I will listen quietly when people of color need me to.
I ask that all of you also reflect on the ways you benefit from racist societal structures. I recommend reading “White Fragility” and “How to be an Anti-Racist”. Don’t have much time? Read “Unpacking the Knapsack of White Privilege”. Watch the movie “13th”. When others confront you about your racism, take a deep breath, listen quietly, and attempt to quell your natural defensiveness. We have been raised in a society founded on slavery and racism. These values (and yes, some people hold them as values) remain entrenched in our society in subtle and not-so subtle ways. I challenge you to learn to see them so that you can learn to undo them. We can’t undo the damage that’s been done, and we don’t have the right to ask for forgiveness, but we can work to create a more equitable world going forward.
Have an awesome day!
Temira
