Statement on Racial Justice
Black Lives Matter. I say that with no reservations and no caveats, and I stand with Black, indigenous, and other people of color against structural racism, against mass incarceration, against police violence, against unequal treatment, against outright racism, and against any other sorts of targeted behaviors or systems. It is also Pride month. Queer Black lives matter. I will be donating 10% of income from this website this month to the National Black Justice Coalition. I encourage you to do the same.
Statement on Racial Justice
I pledge to speak out against racism, and I pledge to be a humble ally who is willing to look at the ways that I benefit personally from racist structures in this society. I will continue to speak up and help wake up others, and I will listen quietly when people of color need me to.
I ask that all of you also reflect on the ways you benefit from racist societal structures. I recommend reading “White Fragility” and “How to be an Anti-Racist”. Don’t have much time? Read “Unpacking the Knapsack of White Privilege”. Watch the movie “13th”. When others confront you about your racism, take a deep breath, listen quietly, and attempt to quell your natural defensiveness. We have been raised in a society founded on slavery and racism. These values (and yes, some people hold them as values) remain entrenched in our society in subtle and not-so subtle ways. I challenge you to learn to see them so that you can learn to undo them. We can’t undo the damage that’s been done, and we don’t have the right to ask for forgiveness, but we can work to create a more equitable world going forward.

Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s going to be a windy stretch, and a lot of you are headed this way. Please remember that there is a pandemic going on. Maintain social distancing. Don’t congregate in groups and hang out at the beaches. Rig, ride, go home. Sure, that’s not as much fun, but hanging around drinking beer and socializing in close contact, even outdoors, presents the possibility for virus transmission. On to the good news: lots of wind in the forecast!
Saturday’s going to be a very windy day through much of the Gorge despite the light-wind, chore-friendly weather in the Hood River area this morning. That’s perfect for the Swell City work party hosted by CGW2 this morning at 9am. Early gradients were .13 and .07, signaling that you’ll find wind anywhere you go. Morning reading from Pacific Ocean high pressure: 1034mb. Excellent! As for the wide coverage of wind today – yay for lack of crowds and the ability to keep distance from others! Expect morning wind at 26-29 from Doug’s to Arlington (perhaps Mosier too) with gusty 15-20 in the west with more at Viento. Afternoon: 30-35 from Stevenson to Arlington. River flow is 257kcfs, and temp is 63 degrees.
Sunday will be cloudy all day as a low moves inland and eventually sets up in the eastern Gorge. This weather makes for tricky forecasting and a high chance of the wind under-performing due to low-level instability; afternoon thunderstorm chances are non-zero all the way from Cascade Locks to Boardman. Morning westerlies will likely be 12-15 from Stevenson to The Dalles with a non-zero chance of sprinkles in that zone. East of there, you'[ll find 23-26 in the morning. Don’t’ rush to drive east; as that low moves into the desert in the afternoon, the wind will most likely drop off. Best guess for the afternoon is gusty 21-26 from Viento to Doug’s, 12-15 at Stevenson, and 10-13 east of The Dalles.
We’re back to “classic Gorge setup” for Monday and Tuesday: morning clouds, strong offshore high pressure, and very strong westerlies. Current forecast is for average speeds to max out at 32-26 from Swell to Roosevelt on Monday and 29-33 east of Hood River on Tuesday.

Mt. Hood Meadows is now allowing uphill travel within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here.
