Statement on Racial Justice
Black Lives Matter. I say that with no reservations and no caveats, and I stand with Black, indigenous, and other people of color against structural racism, against mass incarceration, against police violence, against unequal treatment, against outright racism, and against any other sorts of targeted behaviors or systems. It is also Pride month. Queer Black lives matter. I will be donating 10% of income from this website this month to the National Black Justice Coalition. I encourage you to do the same.
Statement on Racial Justice
I pledge to speak out against racism, and I pledge to be a humble ally who is willing to look at the ways that I benefit personally from racist structures in this society. I will continue to speak up and help wake up others, and I will listen quietly when people of color need me to.
I ask that all of you also reflect on the ways you benefit from racist societal structures. I recommend reading “White Fragility” and “How to be an Anti-Racist”. Don’t have much time? Read “Unpacking the Knapsack of White Privilege”. Watch the movie “13th”. When others confront you about your racism, take a deep breath, listen quietly, and attempt to quell your natural defensiveness. We have been raised in a society founded on slavery and racism. These values (and yes, some people hold them as values) remain entrenched in our society in subtle and not-so subtle ways. I challenge you to learn to see them so that you can learn to undo them. We can’t undo the damage that’s been done, and we don’t have the right to ask for forgiveness, but we can work to create a more equitable world going forward.

Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s going to be a windy stretch, and a lot of you are headed this way. Please remember that there is a pandemic going on. Maintain social distancing. Don’t congregate in groups and hang out at the beaches. Rig, ride, go home. Sure, that’s not as much fun, but hanging around drinking beer and socializing in close contact, even outdoors, presents the possibility for virus transmission. On to the good news: lots of wind in the forecast!
Friday morning starts with gradients of 0.11 and 0.02, but don’t be fooled by the lack of millibars out east. They’re coming! Our setup today includes 1030mb offshore high pressure and an approaching cold front. Approaching anything of any kind is usually not great (unless it’s a marine push), but today’s setup is definitely ‘good enough’. Expect 17-20 from Viento to Hood River, maybe Mosier for a couple hours. The wind quickly builds to 23-26 from Stevenson to The Dalles. It then drops near Swell and picks up to 26-29 from Rowena to Arlington with Stevenson likely to hit that stronger range too. River flow is 280kcfs and temp is 62 degrees. High temp today: upper 80’s central, 95 Arlington and also super muggy.
That aforementioned cold front slides on through on Saturday morning. It’ll drag the marine layer as far as Hood River. Combine that with strong offshore high pressure for a wickedly windy start: 25-28+ at Viento, gusty 20-26 Swell to Hood River, 28-32 from Bingen to The Dalles (remember that Mosier is only open to Mosier locals). Afternoon wind: 31-35 from Stevenson to Arlington with 34-38 from Rowena to Rufus. Work party Saturday: Swell City in the morning. Be there or be square.
Sunday gets a bit more complicated as clouds stick around all day thanks to a low pressure system in the Columbia Basin. This isn’t ideal, as it could set off some thunderstorms. Maybe, maybe not. Anyway, that low combined with strong offshore high pressure will keep the wind going. Race Sunday: Vortex paddle series #3 from Stevenson to Home Valley. Showers in the western Gorge limit morning wind: call it 7-10 from Stevenson to Doug’s early with 20-23 in the afternoon. The desert low will likely shut down the wind east of Rufus in the afternoon, but you’ll still find gusty 24-28 from Viento to Rufus. Monday: 28-32. Tuesday: 30-35. Wednesday: 30-35. Happy!

Mt. Hood Meadows is now allowing uphill travel within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here. Local Events
Exciting news today for those of you who like pools – the Hood River aquatic center reopened yesterday, and The Dalles pool is reopening on July 1st. Fun events include a free outdoor dance party at the Gorge Athletic Club in The Dalles tonight. There’s a work party at Swell City tomorrow. On Sunday, there’s a bass fishing tournament in Hood River starting at 4:30 at the Marina, and a chance to practice animal tracking at Oxbow Park in Gresham from 9am to noon. Dirty Fingers has the Sunday Service gravel bike ride (call for details), and the Vortex Paddle Series race #3 is from Stevenson to Home Valley on Sunday midday.
